$cat /etc/network/interfaces
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
iface eth0 inet static
And how would i reconfigure my network card
my network card is infact running fine only the problem seems to be in
gnome utilite "network configuration"

Thank you for your post but i was not looking for this ,
i did a workaround myself by installing a ftp server and copying contents of dvds in
seperated folders and hosting them to the ftp server ...
I have complete 5 dvds of ubuntu 8.04 repositories
and using them for installing various packages now i want to
create mirror or repository of them so my friends in the college
could benefit...
you could try reinstalling your gnome desktop enviorment
first try fixing broken dependencies
sudo apt-get install -f
then use this
sudo apt-get install --reinstall...
