    as it turned out it was a video problem. the MB was starting to die. got a new board in transit with much more power and video. still, thanks for all the help guys, I sure did learn a lot.

    thats the puppy!. the notification bar is bad enough in 10.10 with it blocking that upper right corner all the time. just want the tool and task bars down on the bottom instead of the top.
