[ubuntu] Re: PDF Support (Re: OCR)

The only reliable ocr I have found for ubuntu is tesseract and you have to convert pdf to tiff. Works well, but not as good as convincing my wife to just type the stuff manually.

[all variants] Is Samba the best option?

I need to share files between an Ubuntu and a Kubuntu box over the network, it seems like Samba would do what I need. Is it the best option if I don't need windows compatibility?
  6. Re: A Plea to the Community: Don't Reward Bad Behavior

I would have to agree. Switching to Linux when your only OS experience is preinstalled windows can be really frustrating, sometimes you need to vent. Of course if you spend time looking for a...

[ubuntu] Re: can't get out of the gate

I don't know if this will help, but I've always had issues with grub using more than one keyboard at once. Have you tried each of your keyboards one at a time?

    [other] Re: Youtube/Flash Videos

I did a fresh install of 8.04 on my amd64 PC, and was able to install flash through the included Firefox 3 beta 5 browser. Point your browser at youtube or something and you will be prompted to...
  9. [ubuntu] Re: what's a good wireless router that'll work with Hardy on an HP Pavillion laptop

I just use a cheap Belkin router, and I'm very satisfied. However, Linksys has some linux based routers that are able to use custom firmware, and are incredibly flexible because of it.
  10. [ubuntu] Re: Desktop Effects not working on 8.04 (Radeon 9600xt)

I had the same card and it gave me grief with every distro I tried it with, so I ditched it for a comparable Nvidia card. There's definitely a cheaper solution somewhere, but there you go...

[other] Re: Is it worth buying the Eee PC?

I was seriously considering the eee a couple months ago, but I figured that a device with such low res / memory / speed should either be much cheaper or smaller, so I went with the nokia N810...

[ubuntu] Re: I want alternatives to these Windows programs

If you're not down with Rythmbox, AmaroK is pretty killer. I like the way it organizes my tunes and how it deals with portable MP3 players, but it's a little bulky. Still, it's worth a try; you can...

[other] Re: Can't access hard drive

I'm no expert, but I always use the Gparted live cd to change partitions, and have never had any problems. You can get it HERE. Gparted might also be included in the Ubuntu live cd, but I'm not sure.

[ubuntu] Re: Random space on my top bar

That's odd. Right-click on the icon. If "Lock to panel" is selected, deselect it. Right-click on the icon, and click move. You can re- lock the icon if you want.
