do you see any networks in the panel network icon? if you see one you just click it then network manager should ask you for the password, that's how easy it is to connect wireless on Ubuntu....
did this command install libdvdcss2? if you not sure try adding the medibuntu repository then install libdvdcss 2

most likely you need to install a driver first if the wireless card chipset is not supported with open source software.

you don't need to use the terminal, use gparted to unmount before formatting then to mount again just click the drive in the file browser, this is very simple I think you are doing it the wrong way...

when you try to format you have to unmount the usb drive, you will have to mount the drive again to see files or scan the drive....
