Re: which search machines are good.

Google dwarfs all others in their crawling and indexing. It's not really even a close contest.

Re: Upgrading a 9.04 Jaunty virtual machine

Trying to upgrade from just one old EOL release to a newer release is, at best, a gamble. It is more likely to end in a significant negative emotional event than in success. In your case, upgrading...

Re: apt autoremove simply does not work

I would certainly agree that it should be easier to remove the lot -- and that if it is this difficult it needs to be addressed.

If your post was long and you were getting a "security token" warning, simply shorten your post or break it in two. There is a size limit for posts. The "security token" thing is a bit of a red...

Re: New Install -- Radeon R7-370 overheats

    Arch wiki to the rescue!

I want to stress that this can cause damage -- bear that caveat in mind.

Re: New Install -- Radeon R7-370 overheats

I just noticed something. Does this card have an integrated graphics controller as well as your dedicated card?

If so, check your settings in BIOS and make sure that your dedicated graphics are...

Re: New Install -- Radeon R7-370 overheats

That Mobo is new enough that the OS-controlled-GPU issue should not be a problem.

The card's onboard firmware fan control should be able to control the fan on its own without input from the OS or...

Re: New Install -- Radeon R7-370 overheats

Could you give us the make/manufacturer of the machine -- or more particularly the motherboard.

Some Win 7 systems were built with hardware that gave GPU fan control to the OS.

Re: New Install -- Radeon R7-370 overheats

The legacy driver, if by that you mean fglrx, is gone.

The Linux kernel now contains two modules (open-source drivers, if you will) -- radeon and amdgpu -- one or the other of which is loaded...

  16. Re: AMD APU and Virutal Box - use AMDGPU instead of Radeon?

Ignore what your host machine sports as its GPU. A VM in VirtualBox has access only to a virtual GPU provided by the Hardware Abstraction Layer in VirtualBox.

If you run the three commands above...
  17. Re: AMD APU and Virutal Box - use AMDGPU instead of Radeon?

Are those results from the host or the VM?

(I already know. This is an exercise in understanding how the VM communicates with the host through a hardware abstraction layer.)

Re: ubuntu 19.10 RV710 AMD Radeon HD 4550

    Just an explanatory note:

The kernel now includes the modules for the open source Radeon driver and the AMDGPU driver. The latter does not support your card. The former does.

    When you install...
  23. Re: ideas to how to use a old busted up laptop.

  24. [ubuntu] Re: In 2020, which supports linux better - AMD or Intel?

I agree about laptops. Intel/Intel just makes things easier. Intel/AMD and Intel/NVIDIA are a pain and the OEMs have not made hybrid systems easy for Linux users.
