It's working okay now. :)
After an installation from Synaptic, the following message, which appears most times in Synaptic ..
Okay thanks, I'll try that. I did read up more and issued a
history -a yet that works (up arrow to retrieve) for some commands and not others ??
The commands that were pasted (Shift, Ctrl-V) and...
Does this help ? - https://askubuntu.com/questions/1288042/gnome-flashback-desktop-icons-stuck-in-auto-arrange-icons
If it helps I have had a lot of display problems since installing 20.04.1 also. Parts of different themes overlaping, not able to see all of the screen, etc. Are you able to hook up an external...
Since doing a fresh install of 20.04.1 (this was necessary as updating 19.10 was removed), there have been quite a number of problems. This is probably the worst install of Kubuntu I have...
Okay thanks :)
Okay thanks. Yes, I always do a fresh install ( after backups) of any release.
Thanks :)
I went to add a new application called Planner from Synaptic and got a few error messages, files not found. In terminal, an update shows:
$ sudo apt update
[sudo] password for **********: ...
The /snap path was 1.2 Gb. Ran this command
sudo snap set system refresh.retain=2
and now it is 500 Mb. From https://www.linuxuprising.com/2019/04/how-to-remove-old-snap-versions-to-free.html...
Thanks. Also it will help removing apps that I don't use and have no (future) need of, like I run KDE, but only use Dolphin and KMyMoney, no PIM at all, and no need of akonadi services.
Yes, I have been cleaning up /var/log path. It's not just 5.3.0-18 files , earlier versions also.
5.3.0-64-generic
The housekeeping I'm doing seems to keep older versions.
I have been using the following to clean up disk space
sudo apt-get autoclean # only removes files that cannot be downloaded anymore (obsolete)
sudo apt-get autoremove #removes old...
Yes, it is definitely BIOS, as when I try to set it to UEFI, the HP msg is that it is experimental and a warning, so I leave it as BIOS.
After the initial post in this thread, I grabbed a GParted...
I have tried a fresh install of 20.10 a number of times. I boot from the ISO on the usb, select "Install" and then go through all those steps. The last item is to remove the USB and press ENTER,...
This is now fixed in 20.04.1, so will mark this solved.
I remember I did try to make the BIOS set to UEFI, however an error msg that it was experimental, so didn't select it. The laptop is quite old. So, the installation has defaulted to EUFI/UFI despite...
One computer has 19.10 installed and the partitions are as follows:

Only yesterday I (finally) got a 20.04.1 clean installation done ( see https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2452691 ) . Performance is very slow and the light for the HDD is on most of the...
@sudodus - just an FYI, the only way I was able to see the "Try" and "Install" options was to follow your advice and use recovery mode (grub) to select the 'Text graphics' option.
As the installation has now worked ( see https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2452691 ), will mark this one as solved now. Thanks to everyone for your help. :)
Have now had a successful installation. The
fdisk to reformat the hard drive was obviously what was needed. Some sort of boot sector garbage ??
The install has created a 537 Mb fat32...
By default, the internal monitor is not enabled. Have been able to get past that stage, and do an actual 'Install", yet on reboot, it says no OS on the Hard drive. Have done the 'Install" twice now,...
I did try that. Here is what I had to do to get there...
