  1. [xubuntu] Re: Is A Larger USB Beneficial to running Xubuntu Live?

There's no advantage to using a larger drive as a live USB, other than larger drives are sometimes coincidentally faster - more chips mean that more can be read in parallel, up to the interface...

    Re: Linux or Thunderbird?

It's how different filesystems get attached to the filesystem tree. The location in the filesystem tree where a filesystem gets attached is called the mount point, and accessing that location shows...

    Re: Linux or Thunderbird?

From your description it sounds to me more that you've got your Thunderbird config files on your Windows partition, but that partition isn't being automatically mounted until you manually access it,...
  4. Re: list of vendors that sell hardware ready for Linux

    Back on topic:

Buying from a company with poor linux support sends a market signal that you don't care about good linux support. Whether you're more interested in the hardware than the...
  5. Re: list of vendors that sell hardware ready for Linux

I already did, earlier in the thread.

Your number 1 is broadly neutral; if you want Secure Boot to restrict the ability of unauthorised software to run then having it is a definite plus. If you...
  6. Re: I could use some help with update....

apt-get isn't the only upgrade option. The default has moved to apt, although I couldn't tell you what the differences are between them without looking it up. Another one is aptitude which handles...
  7. Re: list of vendors that sell hardware ready for Linux

    It never was.

Secure Boot, which is a feature that UEFI has that BIOS didn't, allows the motherboard to prevent the loading of software that isn't signed with keys that the motherboard knows...
  8. Re: list of vendors that sell hardware ready for Linux

FAT is part of the specification.

Re: AMD Ryzen 3 audio problems

That's a hardware issue: insufficient shielding or isolation between the electronics on your motherboard and the onboard sound.

Having a shared earth between your computer and your amp, or having...
  10. Re: Should I use the latest Ubuntu or LTS version?

As a general rule I recommend new users go with the LTS releases. They have 5 years of support, but the interim releases only get 9 months. New users sometimes to forget to upgrade, so they end up...
  11. [server] Re: What is the Difference Between Ubuntu 16.04 & 18.04

It won't deliberately affect your running websites, but only you can do the necessary testing.
  12. Re: Help in troubleshooting XPS 13 9370 suspend issues

Dell have UEFI update files on their website. You just put the newest file on a USB thumb drive and then press a key - F12, I think - to start the upgrade process.
  13. [server] Re: What is the Difference Between Ubuntu 16.04 & 18.04

20.04 isn't released yet: it will be released in April 2020 - that's how the version numbers work. It's just that it will be released before 16.04 loses support, so it's an option to consider.

    You...
  14. [server] Re: What is the Difference Between Ubuntu 16.04 & 18.04

The big change is the switch from Unity to Gnome, which isn't really relevant for a server with no GUI. Other than that, it's just new versions of stuff.

You'll have to upgrade to 18.04 or 20.04...
  15. Re: list of vendors that sell hardware ready for Linux

    You brought it up.

Of course you can compile a kernel and boot it from UEFI. How exactly do you think everyone's computers work?

[ubuntu] Re: Nvidia forgot the registry key,

The Additional Drivers tool is brilliant for discoverability but, because it's been so simplified, it doesn't give a lot of feedback if there are any problems.

It has the handy hardware scanner...
  18. [kubuntu] Re: start menu and drop downs do not render properly.

You could try fiddling with the fonts settings. Maybe you've just got it set to use a size that's too big for the menus?
  19. Re: Static noise when mic level goes above 20% (Intel chipset)

It's possible that it's autodetected the wrong control for the mic gain. Many audio devices have a separate pre-amp (sometimes called something like "boost"), which is often noisy.

    You could have...
  20. Re: list of vendors that sell hardware ready for Linux

It doesn't have its own OS, but it can run applications and have a shell. The bootloader and firmware setup are both UEFI applications, for example.

BIOS was reverse-engineered and then extended...

  22. Re: list of vendors that sell hardware ready for Linux

Generally, you don't, even if the manufacturer gives instructions for Windows users. UEFI can update itself; it doesn't need an external application. Just feed it the file on a thumb drive.
  23. Re: list of vendors that sell hardware ready for Linux

If you aren't using UEFI then you're doing it wrong.

BIOS was an ancient pile of kludges, weirdness, and undocumented behaviour. No machine uses it now. They're all UEFI, which can be made to...
  24. Re: Not asked for root/admin password during install

There's nothing more to explain. The installer asks you to set a user password. It doesn't ask you to set a password for root; no root password is set; you can't log in as root even if you set a root...
  25. Re: Unable to install "curl" after installing Tensorflow

That is not the sign of a happy package manager. Letting those be autoremoved might give your package manager less to worry about.

If you've done a bunch of manual version pinning that can...
