    Re: Overwrite Windows 10 disk

    Hello.

I decided to use Rufus to install Xubuntu 18.04 to a cheap thumb drive I bought today and was going to use it to overwrite the HD with zeros. A family member just told me that some files...

    Re: Overwrite Windows 10 disk

Thank you for the assertion of 'Windows Diskpart' brown1918. Once I'm at a command prompt, I should be able to follow the link's commands.

Hey Fred, nice of you to post. I'll look at your suggestion later, (and no doubt coming from you, I'll use it).

    Overwrite Windows 10 disk

    Hello everyone.

I'm hesitant to ask this because of the danger it poses to readers. I'm on my 91 year old father's computer. He is going into a nursing home in the next couple of weeks and the...
  5. Re: Online Purchases. Do you buy online and if so, how?

Thank you, for this advice, with the thoughts of what I might best be able to achieve in Canada.

Thank you, my 'bank', allows for multiple checking accounts, with all accounts free of charge....
  6. Re: Online Purchases. Do you buy online and if so, how?

    Yep!

Lots of good advice. I can see the 'writing on the wall'.

    - Purchasing online is, 'the way of the future'. In many ways it is here now.
    - It will be a major convenience for me....
  7. Re: Online Purchases. Do you buy online and if so, how?

Thanks. I'll be sure to inquire of what ever service I do use, if they have recurring payments and make sure I can cancel it.
  8. Re: Online Purchases. Do you buy online and if so, how?

No worries. I'm a senior citizen used to paying cash or using a bank debit card. Conversation and thoughts like yours are helping me to learn the way of online transactions.

    Pigeons and Spanish...
  9. Re: Online Purchases. Do you buy online and if so, how?

@ sonicwind. I hadn't heard of such a service. It sounds good. I'll have to start asking around in Canada, for a similar service.

Addendum. I want to buy from both Canadian and American retailers,...
  10. Re: Online Purchases. Do you buy online and if so, how?

Yes, I realised after I posted it was the wrong forum. Instead of putting in an addendum requesting a Mod to move it to the Cafe, I left it figuring, if any wanted it moved they would. Yes, it's a...
  11. Online Purchases. Do you buy online and if so, how?

    Hi.

Call me Paranoid/Stupid or whatever you want. I have a real hard time buying online. The times I have in the past when I have had to, like paying professional fees that are only accepting...
  12. Re: Tails for security when connecting to public wireless?

Thanks! I wouldn't have known to look, for what is happening with them.

My subscription with PIA is up, towards the end of August, (if they are still running then). I'll be changing my provider. I...

    Re: Almost done with Linux...

The Devaun folks have done away with systemd successfully. One will still use the Debian Repos with it. They even recommend people look at the many distros that have adopted Devaun, that cater to...

Re: Why Does Ubuntu Still Have Upgrades

I wonder how well release upgrades will go from Ubuntu Unity to Ubuntu Gnome3 in 18.04? I hope they, (devs and release teams) can swing it, for the masses that depend upon upgrading releases...
  15. Re: Issue affecting some Skylake/Kaby Lake processors

    Thanks, vasa1.

I don't have an affected processor now but, I am planning to buy a new system with a Kaby Lake processor, that will probably be affected. I'll be checking the new processor against...

    Re: Not a happy camper

You could probably 'further the cause' of an Ubuntu Community 'Unity' DE being sponsored, by contributing here. I expect to see a community project of Ubuntu Unity DE, that will develop into an...
  17. Re: Tips on maintaining a computer for a senior citizen?

This has been an informative thread. There are many good tips from multiple posters, I appreciate and plan to followup on.

I wasn't going to post but, this made me laugh --- thanks, for that too!
  18. Re: The Ubuntu Desktop Team Wants YOUR Feedback Via Survey

I think this is, a very optimistic representation for the future the Ubuntu Desktop by the Ubuntu devs, through requesting Ubuntu users to participate in the design of the new Ubuntu desktop. There...

    Re: Suggestion for us "Oldies"

I think Bob is speaking about, like he indicated. Moving a file or folder from one file to another in a file-manager, (with a mouse-grab).

By the way Bob, I was thinking about your up-coming (I...

    Re: Suggestion for us "Oldies"

    Hi.

I've always had vision problems. I had eye-surgery in Dec/17, (not for cataract-lense replacement, like you are going through). I had a bleed in my right-eye that caused it to lose much of its...
  21. Re: Looking for affordable cloud backup providers for headless servers

Have you looked at TarSnap? A Canadian company from Vancouver.

Maybe an affordable alternative you could use after this first year with hubiC.

  22. Re: Cannot install Xfce 4.12 on Xubuntu 14.04

Try this in an vm or test install then.

    Copy source.list:

    sudo cp /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list.backup

    Open sources.list:

Re: End of Ubuntu Phone and Unity

Ya, I was waiting for that too!

Looks like fun; but, I would only buy a smart phone for Ubuntu or another distro's packaged convergence ... sigh.

Re: End of Ubuntu Phone and Unity

    And I call fear-mongering!

I have a faith that Mark will not give up on Ubuntu. I have always believed that he cares deeply about Ubuntu and still does. He as owner of Canonical, appears to have...
  25. Re: What version of Ubuntu (or any other variant/"flavor") do you use as your desktop

Hi, I hope you get results, they will be interesting to see.

For me, I use different ones and often have Beta, Regular, and Older & Current LTS at the same time. I'm near blind right now so, I...
