One of the reasons I'm sticking to my 12.04 LTS. It seems all the 12.10's and 13.04's have issues. My 12.04 LTS just keeps rocking.

I would use "Brasero" to burn the Boot Repair Disk.iso to a CD. The "corrupted machine will probably boot to the CD/DVD drive first.
Do you have a wireless card that is functioning? I use my phones HotSpot function to connect to the internet and upgrade, install pkgs, etc.

Even if the system is a 32bit, but has 4GB of RAM then the 64 bit install is recomended. 32 bit with 2GB or lower of RAM need the 32 bit install.

I think with those specs you can put on anything your heart desires. Try Kubuntu, then Bohdi, then open SUSE, then CrunchBang, then Fedora first.
