    Knoppix will get you able to mount your filesystem and edit the file. But could you not do that anyway in 12.04 Recovery Mode with the Live CD?

    Centos 5.6 which is located in their vault area - you have to search for 'centos vault' else its hard to find. 100 years security suppprt hard to argue with.

    I should add that I tried
    sudo ifconfig eth0 down and that did take the network down alright without an error message or any message. However
    sudo ifconfig eth0 up did nothing so I had to admit...

    I know at least 1 distro has an etc/sysconfing/kernel file you can edit to make the value NO_KMS_IN_INITRD=yes

    Try nomodeset at the grub2 menu you have to edit. (I haven;t found out how to make it permanent yet..)

    Also noacpi I have found more useful than acpi=off and I use noacpi in addition to pci=noacpi...
