Have you tried 'sudo -P now'?

    the -P is for poweroff
the now is to start the shutdown immediately.

Mint should be able to see it. You may have to be root in order to see the folder (maybe some chroot and stuff). If you deleted files, then photorec is the app to recover them.

[all variants] Re: dns iptables problem

When you ping someone, it is an existing connection. The problem is that you don't have a rule to allow the protocol icmp in or out.

This should address your pinging problem.

[all variants] Re: dns iptables problem

Notice how you have sport and dport for ports 26662 and 8080.
You only have dport for port 53.
    Try adding

    iptables -A INPUT -p udp --sport 53 -m state --state NEw,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT

[ubuntu] Re: iptables firewall doesn't work

From your iptables output, I can tell that you just copied and pasted it without actually understanding it. If you look at your policies, you will noticed that it is set to accept.

[ubuntu] Re: Hardy - Immediate Logout

You may probably also suffer some performance issues since your swap partition is a lot lower than your actual memory. You probably won't be able to use hibernation.

[ubuntu] Re: Help a linux N00b

Oh. You installed ubuntu using Wubi.

If you want to mount with root permissions, you'll have to add sudo in front of your command.

Before you mount, you also need to make a directory.

[ubuntu] Re: [swap] how to resize swap?

Just a side note. RAM > swap size means no hibernate.

Edit: Hibernate puts all your ram into the swap partition.
This may cause problems if you have a smaller swap size than RAM.
