By default, grub will install on the HD that is set to boot first in your bios unless you tell the ubuntu installer (usually in step 7 of the install process) to install grub...

Also, if I remember right as it has been a while since I've last re-used a separate /home in a new install ...... remember to use the same username and password to minimize permission...

Assuming you were using GRUB as your bootloader and that GRUB was installed in the MBR of the HD that died ...
You can change the order of the disks in BIOS.

The first command installs lilo (a bootloader) into your MBR ... effectively overwriting GRUB. You want to revert your system back to original windows and it's bootloader.
