I've been using some form of Linux since 1999. Been using Ubuntu exclusively for the past three years.
I'm not going to lie, I've had a few of those moments myself. And honestly the only reason I'm still using Windows 7 is because I have to support it at work.
Another way, although lengthy, may be to "connect to server" and connect to the remote folder/drive. Then save your files on your laptop and drag/drop to the remote directory.

Well since I'm not officially supporting Linux in my office, I'm not a professional. And even though I've been using Linux off and on for over 10 years, I'm definitely not a guru.
If you have security enabled, turn it off and see if you can connect. If you can then it may be a security type Ubuntu doesn't work well with.
How did you install the flash aid, command line or gui?
If you go into software center and search for it, does it give you an option to uninstall? If it does, uninstall it and reboot.

So are you looking at something like Verizon's mobile hotspot device, or something similar by another carrier? Any of them should work with Linux.
