[SOLVED] Re: Dead key not so dead

Just for the record. There was indeed a problem. I noticed that "repeat keys" wasn't working, and found this thread on askubuntu. Now, weird characters have disappeared, and repeat keys work.

Now, that's strange. After a reboot, the behaviour has changed slightly.

Now, I still see the weird character when the dead key is pressed, but when I press the "real" letter, it substitutes the...

[SOLVED] Dead key not so dead

    Hello,

I just upgraded to 17.10, and everything went fine, except for a weird behavior I have just observed. When I press a dead key (for an accent), I get a strange character instead. If I'm...

    Thanks a lot!

I can confirm that the key is setting a supervisor password at the BIOS. I never disabled Secure Boot.

[SOLVED] Re: Stuck in grub2. Please help!

I only have one hard disk. When I started with a USB disk plugged in, this was labeled as hd0, and the system disk was hd1. If I didn't plug the USB disk, I only had hd0. Hence the mismatch....

[SOLVED] Stuck in grub2. Please help!

    Hello, everybody,

I have been moving and resizing partitions with gparted, but I forgot to run update-grub after that. Now, the system boots to a grub2 command line (version 2.02-beta2-9ubuntu1.3,...
  9. [SOLVED] Re: fstab ruined in ecryptfs. Please help recovering

OK, fixed. Apparently, the encrypted devices in /proc/mounts don't get mounted from fstab. I commented out the two lines with my username (/home/joanc) and left just the /dev/sda8 for /home.

    Now,...
  10. [SOLVED] fstab ruined in ecryptfs. Please help recovering

    Hello,

I was trying to setup a Samba share and I thought mountmanager would help. Boy, was I wrong. It didn't work (maybe because I didn't have cifs-utils installed, I don't know or care too much,...

  13. [SOLVED] Re: Gparted doesn't see any partitions, but Linux does

    Oooops!!!!
My mistake. I had tried the disk on another system, where it was /dev/sdc. It's /dev/sdb now, of course, thanks for pointing it out!. This the *real* output of fixparts

  14. [SOLVED] Re: Gparted doesn't see any partitions, but Linux does

I've tried fixparts on it, and I get the following:

[all variants] Re: Removed a disk, computer won't boot

I'm not sure whether it's the hard disk or the controller that has problems. It's too much of a coincidence for the two disks to fail at the same time!

  18. [SOLVED] Re: Partitioning a dual-boot laptop with 32GB SSD. Advice requested

I don't think it was RAID; I had disabled Intel RST and removed the RAID metadata before.

Finally, the winning stroke was Boot-Repair. I booted into the Live CD, and, instead of reinstalling for...
  19. [SOLVED] Re: Installation OK, but the bootloader isn't there

I had tried to do it by reinstalling Kubuntu again and again, to no avail.

Boot-repair did it. I just started the Live CD, apt-got boot-repair, ran, and it works. Thanks!
  20. [SOLVED] Installation OK, but the bootloader isn't there

I have just installed Kubuntu in an HP netbook (details in this thread). The root wil be in the SSD (/dev/sdb), and /home and swap in the HDD (/dev/sda). Windows 7 is also there.

    After a clean...

  22. [SOLVED] Re: Partitioning a dual-boot laptop with 32GB SSD. Advice requested

After some more research, it *is* using Intel RST, with RAID and everything. This link explains the setup. The part of the SSD used for raid doesn't show as a partition, but the Intel RST driver is...
  23. [SOLVED] Re: Partitioning a dual-boot laptop with 32GB SSD. Advice requested

I am attaching two screenshots of how Gparted 1.16.1.1 sees both disks. I see no sign of RAID, here. The warning sign on sdb (the SSD) is because Gparted doesn't recognize the partition type...
  24. [SOLVED] Re: Partitioning a dual-boot laptop with 32GB SSD. Advice requested

  25. [SOLVED] Partitioning a dual-boot laptop with 32GB SSD. Advice requested

    Hi,

I just bought an HP envy 6-1050ss. It's got a 500 GB disk + a 32 GB SSD. It comes with Windows 7 preinstalled (not 8, yay!), and I intend to keep it as a dual-boot, although my primary OS will...
