Either you entered the command wrongly or your installation went badly wrong! If you didn't do the ybin step properly then the system will be unbootable, that's clear.

Not sure if it's valid for 12.04, but on 13.04 there's an installer bug that blacklists the sound drivers. Look in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.local.conf and comment out the sound driver references...
Keep trying, it can work very well! I just did it on my G5 Powermac with NVidia 6600LE card (one of the least-friendly) take a look at my post here...
