Microsoft sets prices for Vista in the US
Posted by Amber Maitland
06 September 2006 - Microsoft has set pricing for the Windows Vista operating system for the US market, although UK and rest of the world pricing is not yet available.
The Redmond-based company also confirmed again its commitment to releasing the OS in January, after distributing it to business customers in November.
The upgrade price for those with older versions of Windows is set at between $100 to $259, depending on which version required. The most expensive will be the “ultimate” edition, designed for business users.
The standalone products will cost from $199 to $399.
The most popular consumer version of Vista is expected to be the Home Premium edition, which features in-built entertainment options, like support for HD TV and DVD editing and burning, and will cost $159 for the upgrade from older Windows.
Release Candidate 1, a test version of Vista, was made available to 5 million business customers worldwide to try out; feedback from users will ultimately determine if the system is ready for release in January.

06 September 2006 - Canonical has set pricing for the Ubuntu Linux 6.10 operating system for the all markets.
The Isle of Man-based company also confirmed again its commitment to releasing the OS in October to all users.
Ubuntu (with GNOME) will cost $0. The education-based Edubuntu will cost $0. Kubuntu (with KDE) will cost $0. Xubuntu (with Xfce) will cost $0. Ubuntu Server Edition will cost $0.
There will likely also be releases from several third-party varients such as nUbuntu, Ebuntu, and Ubuntu Christian Edition being released at around the same time. They are expected to be priced in line with the official Canonical versions.
The most popular consumer version of Ubuntu is expected to be the GNOME version, which features many in-built applications, like OpenOffice.org and Mozilla Firefox, and will cost $0 as was stated before.
Testing of version 6.10 is already underway and Canonical seem to have no shortage of user feedback; this feedback from users will ultimately determine if the system is ready for release in October.
Sorry, I couldn't resist. I always love a good parody. Constructive critique is very much welcome.

I nearly feel off my seat laughing when I say that!
As for the price of Vista...DEAR CHRIST! Looks like MS is being just as greedy as ever, but with more and more people not being to afford expensive OS's, just for "extra" features and a bloated enviornment, I feel that a sudden feeling of looking for an alternative for Windows may come soon.
I don't know about anyone else, but I already stated to a couple of my friends and some tech kids at the Boy's & Girl's Club that I won't be upgrading my Windows XP Pro to Vista. When asked why? I told them that MS really has nothing new to offer anymore.
I tried Office 2007 Beta 2 a few months back and I couldn't even see the message bodies...yeah, no thank you. In fact, when I heard that it was free for public testing...I thought that maybe my ears might have gone bad. MS almost NEVER releases free software, thus adding to the shock.
I can't wait to clear out another 20HDD so that I can load Dapper on it and using this PC instead of my laptop.
As for the Original Post, MS has been hitting the peace pipe to hard since those prices are WAY to freaking high. I can guarantee that most people will try to avoid buying it and upgrading from XP to Vista due to the price. Hey, when you're tight on funds and on a severe budget, like me, even $100 is too expensive.
I LOVE UBUNTU!

The overwhelming majority of users won't see anything near those prices though, they will just get it pre-installed, through volume licenses at their school or at work or just as a handout for attending some meeting.
For companies it's about the cost of prolonging support.
Re: Microsoft Sets Price on Vista
I doubt that I would ever buy from MS, for me $100 is quite an amount, which is why my current computer is only $30 (I live in canada) my next computer which I hope to be getting soon will only be $286, but of course that is a hand me down from my dad, who is getting a brand new computer.
The one thing that I really don't like about Vista is the fact that you need to have an entire video card dedicated to the OS and nothing else.

Re: Microsoft Sets Price on Vista
egadz! how the hell would most people be able to afford that? i can't afford that by a long shot! especially since i've started driving as well.
really, why is it supposedly worth that much? does it come with the office suite? does it come with free tech support for life? does it come with a guy dedicated to install and maintain it? i've seen the beta and it doesn't seem to have much over XP and XP was horribly overpriced.
Re: Microsoft Sets Price on Vista
If your only option is to buy vista for that price, (unemployed and not near any promote meetings) then don't.
If you are a student or an employee, an upgrade will cost $5 and if you go to one of the promotion meetings it's free.

So true. Ubuntu needs to go OEM!!
Re: Microsoft Sets Price on Vista
If people think they have to upgrade to Vista to stay current (like my parents do) then Vista will fly off the shelves.
My parents know of Linux through me, but they aren't interested. Windows is a big, well known brand that they have used for many years and they aren't prepaired to even try Linux.
In fact they won't try open source at all, they are going to be forking out on the new MS Office as well even though OpenOffice is more than adequate for their needs - again they won't even try it even though I sent them screenshots in an email to show them it looks like the MS equivalent.
When people believe they have to get something, price won't be an issue.
My parents don't NEED Vista, they have XP but they seem to think they must have it when it comes out.
