Re: Buying a new laptop/notebook....Dell
I have one of the original Dell XPS m1330's I think. The current Dell developer laptop looks like pretty much the same thing. I installed Ubuntu a few years ago and it works fine.
BUT...here is my issue with the XPS...it has always had some kind of heating issue...meaning that the fan just comes on and sometime stays on all the time...its noisy...it really bugs me. Not sure if this is due to the graphics chip issue this
laptop had in the beginning also, which I paid $$$ to have fixed...
Anyone had any noise or graphic chip issues with the newer Dell XPS?
Once i have a bad experience with a computer...its HARD for me to ever buy that brand again...but I will in cases where I am sure they fixed all the issues...
I can use any laptop ...but i want it quiet and not to run hot.

I am a lot like you. I had a terrible experience with Dell (server not desktop/laptop) and refused to do business with them for roughly nine years. I also originally had a laptop from Dell at work and was not impressed with the quality of the laptop. For years now I have had Lenovo laptops in the T or W series Thinkpads. The quality of those laptops was top notch. I requested an evaluation of the XPS 13 from Dell this year and did not get one at work because I regularly use a docking station. For work I got an X1 Carbon and am happy with it. At home I purchased the Dell XPS 13 and it cost roughly $400 less than a similarly equipped X1 Carbon (minus IPS screen since the 1920x180 resolution on the X1 is non-IPS). I prefer the XPS 13.
I have no over heating issues with the XPS 13 and the fan rarely comes on. When it does come on it turns off after a short period of time. I posted two articles on my blog that you can read more about both laptops.
XPS 13 review and XPS 13 vs X1 Carbon
The XPS 13 is the laptop I prefer to use and the one I have been most happy with purchasing.
