Re: just tried ubuntu live cd and it used hdd when loading why?
It is gathering information about your drive, it won't change anything on it.
Re: just tried ubuntu live cd and it used hdd when loading why?
It will most likely be checking what's there - i.e. checking to see if there is something installed, or if it is empty. This way you can mount your drives while on the live CD and access your data :)
Re: just tried ubuntu live cd and it used hdd when loading why?
If you have a swap partition , from any installed version of Linux, the live CD will mount and use the swap partition.
Also, as Locke_99GS and Joeb454 indicated, reading the drive is not the same as altering it.
The Ubuntu CD will not alter your hard drive unless you tell it to (yes, you can manually use the live CD to save or delete files to the hard drive). No alterations will be made in any kind of an automatic or automated fashion.
Re: just tried ubuntu live cd and it used hdd when loading why?
I believe the disk tries to mount all the partions on your harddrives, so you have access to them from the live cd.

Yeppers, that's what I was thinking too that it was just making the hdd available to you if you wanted to write files to it or basically have access to it.
No harm no foul. :)
