Re: Operating systems for really, really old computers
If you're a masochist you could try booting off of USB1.1
I think you might be able to accomplish booting through a BIOS upgrade, but if you can't I would recommend taking the hard drive out, connecting it to another computer and putting on whatever you need to put on.

Linux from Scratch should be thrown in there. There is a ~300MB -min LFS LiveCD from here. You may also choose from a ~400MB -nosrc CD or a ~700MB one which includes the bunch (X, LFS, Xfce, source code). File names are:
lfslivecd-x86-6.3-r2145-min.iso (-min CD)
lfslivecd-x86-6.3-r2145-nosrc.iso (-nosrc CD)
lfslivecd-x86-6.3-r2145.iso (~700M one, includes everything)
Re: Operating systems for really, really old computers
Oh, I forget that you can install LFS from the LiveCDs of LFS.

Is LFS is Distro? Is there Linux that's not a distro? Like what Linus made?

LFS is a kit to help you make your own system based on the Linux kernel. It does not create a new kernel.

Fedora 8 Werewolf works ok on a 1Core 1Ghz Cpu.
