Sub notebooks / mini laptops
so i have a Asus eeepc 701 that I like (not love) but it's great with Ubuntu running on it. My father wants in and the mini laptop trend and I suggested he wait until someone makes one with a docking station / port replicator.
I find it annoying to have to plug everything in all the time when I want to sit at a desk.
So I started looking around: asus, dell, acer. odd brands. No one makes a model with a port replicator that I can find. There are slightly larger dells but the price is double or tripple.
Has anyone seen anything thats out now or that's coming down the pipeline?
Re: Sub notebooks / mini laptops
I really like this product as a great sub-notebook. It’s small, light with a sleek look. In its defense, I think some people expect too much from this laptop range. But to me, I think it’s great for the money I paid for it ($550US). Its specifications are excellent compared with other sub-notebooks. All I wanted is a small machine, and there it is. All I wanted is to be able to get on the net, and there I am. All I wanted is to take my music with me and be able to play it, which again there I can thanks to its 160GB hard disc!
The cute object has a clear, bright screen, built-in webcam, microphone and speakers are also available along with two USB ports and nice large keyboard!
Also I wasn’t disappointed with battery life, I was able to type for long periods without the need to have the machine plugged in, internet usage was a little draining but I was still impressed with how long the machines battery lasted.
When it comes to the shortcomings of the product, I really can’t think of any, the product was a great price, looks good and does exactly what I need it to do.
In summary, I am not disappointed with my purchase, I got what I expected and needed and for people who want raw processing power and all those little added extras like back-lit keyboard then you need to buy an actual fully featured, fully powered laptop, which includes a fast processor and lots of RAM.

Re: Sub notebooks / mini laptops
If it was me, I'd wait a few months. AMD has partnered up with a few big manufacturers to release some new ultra-thin laptops with their Neo processors. This will mean thin laptops with great battery life and low weight, and still have the power to do some light gaming and watch blu-ray movies. I haven't seen anything as far as docking stations for netbooks though.

You don't have System76 in there. There aren't any of the more 'exotic' brands that come pre-installed with Linux.

Asus and Dell both do.

the amd stuff just isn't our yet... so Atom it is at the moment.
The idea of a docking station seems to have been overlooked i thought Dell would have gotten this.

Re: Sub notebooks / mini laptops
I also have an Eee PC 701/4G. It works fine, but the keyboard just sucks -- my fat fingers cannot touch type on it. Plus the original "2-hour" battery is now a 45-minute battery.
I am really pleased with the Toshiba NB205 310 that I bought for $380 USD. It has a keyboard that is good enough to use productively. I don't care much for the looks of the netbook remix (reminds me of Xandros on the Eee PC), and KDE is just a bit pokey on it, so I installed elive. But I'm sure Xubuntu would be fast on it too.
The only challenge is the speakers -- the ALSA driver does not have an option for it that turns on the speakers. I set it up with OSS and it works fine that way. Everything else including the webcam just works. Battery seems to be good for 7 - 8 hours.
