Ubuntu crashed

Hello!

I recently installed Ubuntu on a laptop, and everything was fine until recently when i normally shut down the computer and after booting it up again i got this:

I'm not sure what that is or what to do, the computer won't boot up.
After that, i can either press enter to enter the terminal which i have no idea what to do in or if i leave it, it goes to disk checking and reboots itself after i either stop it or let it run. Then returns to this screen again.

What do i do?
What even is this? What went wrong?

It looks like you need a new disk drive, since that one is failing. If you have backups, then you are golden. If not, try to boot with an install USB widget and see whether you can mount the HDD and recover your data.

I see...

Well, the laptop is really old and messed up so i can't say that i'm surprised. Bummer...
I'll boot up a live USB to recover the data, there's not much on it, but still.

Is there any chance to "fix" the drive or is it dead?

YDisk drives are actually quite cheap and easy to replace.

Another option is to install Linux on a SD card or USB widget and simply disable the disk drive in the BIOS.

To install on a SD card or USB widget: Get a BIG one and install as normal and it will work as normal.
(A Raspberry Pi runs on a SD card for example)
