Installation failure

I have downloaded several versions of Ubantu to install onn my machine. None have worked. The current version I have is 10.04.3, 32 bit, booting from a cd. I have no idea what is going on. could someone give me some idea about how to install so I at least have some feedback from tyhe installation process - at the moment all I get is a screen that says Ubantu with some dots below the text, then the machine restarts or the screen goes blank. :confused:

Ok. Ubantu is broken. At least for me. Thanks for all the help.

Just for your information, the defect is:
"BUG: Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at (null)".

And the message prior to the defect is "last sysfs file: /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:0b.1/usb1/serial"

I suggest prior to an OS being marked stable that it actually be stable. How frustrating. I have spent over a week trying to get this far.

I have a similar issue; I cannot get Ubuntu 11.10 to install - the installation just hangs.
Interestingly, I can install any other flavour of Linux except Ubuntu :-(
I also have no idea what is going on, it is very frustrating
