What use is Ubuntu Software Centre ? A confused newbie
Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit
I have favoured software applications such as Dolphin , also Kate.
On the left hand of the Desktop screen are 7 application ikons. (I ervicted the ones I'll never use)
I would like to add more. But knowing that an application is installed from information in 'Ubuntu Software Centre' does not seem to lead to any way of running that application or adding it the colomn on the left hand side.
Am I mad, ? what obvious thing have I missed? is it all done in Bash from the Terminal ? (After a struggle I found out how to get that running !)
An thoughts very very welcome,
A struggling,
Tim

You launch installed applications by searching for them in the dash.
To add an application to the launcher just drag it to from the dash or if it is already running you can right-click on it to lock it to the launcher.
You should have a read of the official documentation...

Assuming Ubuntu and not Kubuntu, the top icon on the launch bar on the left is called the Dash
If you select it, you should be able to navigate around to see all the installed applications.
Ubuntu Software Centre is used to install new applications.
Good Luck

And since you prefer Kate and Dolphin you may have wanted to install Kubuntu, not Ubuntu! Ubuntu doesn't come with Dolphin and Kate which are defaults with Kubuntu. Ubuntu comes with Nautilus (~Dolphin) and Gedit (~ Kate).
So what exactly have you been using in the past?

I found the Getting Started Guide and that lead me to Dash, and Dash's search .
Many thanks for responding !

Long Story !
Short version.... I use Mint 11 which I really like, but I can save a lot of money by moving over to WiFi rather than ethernet, as the local G3 tower is close by and offers up to 6Mb/s speeds. The land line is frequently broken and twice the price, with best speed less than 1Mb/s, mostly 450kb/s.
The usb dongle to connect to the wifi modem I have is guaranteed to work on Ubuntu 12.04 for sure by the supplier. So I have to switch OS. If I could get a box that receives WiFi then offers ethernet, that would be magic but I don't know if such a giszmo exists or what it would be called.
WiFi on Linux is non trivial with lots of bad news of abject failures, so I'm just following were the support is best.
Hope all that makes sense...
So if any one knows of a Giszmo that offers ethernet please advise !

Quick tip, the keyboard control 'super +A will open the dash directly in the applications section of the dash.
Simply drag and drop launchers to the sidebar, or when launched find the newly added icon and right-click it, then select lock to launcher.
Icons in the launcher(sidebar) can be rearranged.
