Re: What the hell Ubuntu? How can you do this?
On the slight side track of this thread; I don't like icons one little bit, so I guess that it was to be expected that after looking at Jolicloud I wouldn't like it one little bit either.
I don't like the cloud & its more centralised information gathering potential either. So Jolicloud will never be my friend.
Re: What the hell Ubuntu? How can you do this?
I didn't mean to sound so negative in my previous post.
It's just that, I watched a few vids on youtube about the new 11.04, and it looked so wrong to me. I love the panels and its mini programs.
The left bar docK is horrible, I've tried it.
Ok, so how do I change between the GUIs? I don't have the login screen since I login automatically.

Just log out, and behold, the log in screen appears!

Will Unity be Available for 10.04?
Once Unity is all finished for the 11.04 release, will it be possible to install it on 10.04 Lucid LTS? I'd really like the Unity experience, but don't want to get rid of my Lucid...
Re: Will Unity be Available for 10.04?
The short answer is no, it won't. There are just too many changes to the latest version of Unity to make it feasible to backport it to 10.04.
Re: Will Unity be Available for 10.04?
And what about 10.10 UNE for not powerful netbooks?
I am keeping myself stuck at 10.04 UNE because of what I have read about the sluggish 10.10 UNE behaviour with Atom N270 such as my ZaReason Terra netbook.

Max your ram at the least I have a acer aspire one runs fast with 2 gigs ram and the 1.6 atom. Runs W7 well and Ubuntu really well and many open source platforms.

Well, my Terra netbook has actually 2 GB of memory and I am very happy with it as running 10.04 UNE. What I was wondering is about increasing the performance of current 10.10 UNE to meet that of Unity under Compiz instead of Mutter.
What happens with Gnome after Ubuntu v 11
Hi All,
I've been happily using Ubuntu 10.10 as my primary system for a few months now and i'm very happy with it.
I know it's a little early to say, given I havent even tried Unity yet but I really dont like the look of it and the simplicity of Gnome, both in the way it looks and the way it feels has been a major plus for me in the switch from Windows to Linux.
I do want to stay on the latest ubuntu version but will Gnome not be available moving forward?
I dont know if gnome will be available, whether future versions of gnome will be available or if they are whether they will be buggy in terms of compatiblity with Ubuntu > v. 11 but that is going to be an issue for me.
I really wouldnt like to go through the hassle of switching to another distro but unless Unity is a whole lot better than gnome or if gnome isnt a viable option moving forward that may happen for me.
Would appreciate any information or comments others have on this.
thanks
Hardeep
