This'll do it!
it's called conky!
right click on your panel, click add to panel, and select "system monitor". it is similar to menumeters.
I installed conky with synaptic but it didn't show up anywhere under applications. I'm not TOO familiar with Ubuntu so I don't understand why it isn't showing up anywhere that I can see when I install it.
go to a terminal and type
this will automatically open a file called "conkyrc"Code:conky
this should display what you are after, although on the link I gave you there is a world of changes that can be made and it will pretty much do as you want.
