Ubuntu <-> Windows, 3D softwares
I was planning to install Ubuntu on my laptop but before I do that I wanted to make sure if I will be able to open certain files on some other operating system. For instance, if I writer a text in linux, would I be able to open it in Windows (Vista)? The same for blender,...
Is there a list of programs (Autocad, Rhinoceros, 3ds Max,...) somewhere
that I will be able to run on Linux using Whine or whatever that program is called.
Re: Ubuntu <-> Windows, 3D softwares
You can check how your Windows programs should run under wine at http://appdb.winehq.org/. This should tell you how well it will run and any special settings you might need.
As for opening documents between operating systems it depends what you're wanting to open. Microsoft office documents are usually handled quite well by open office and most programs that will run on Linux as well as Windows should be able to open the same files. The only problem I have ever had is with .txt files as Windows, Linux and Mac all use different characters for 'return'...
Good luck :D
Re: Ubuntu <-> Windows, 3D softwares
When you mean Text? is that a like a word file or just a plain tet file?
If its a plain text file.. in Linux.. stick .txt at the end of the name (this way, Windows see's it as a text file. Linux doesn't have the .txt when creating a plain text file..
with a Word file.. thats where OpenOffice comes in.
Is that what you were asking for?
And yes, Wine can rum many windows applications.. even Call of Duty 4 :D
If the software cannot run in Wine you can either Dual-boot or have a virtual machine in linux.
Re: Ubuntu <-> Windows, 3D softwares
I asked for Office packet. But thanks anyway. And for second part of the question, what if I install Ubuntu and not have windows partition? Would that virtula machine work? (I dont know what it is by the way)
Re: Ubuntu <-> Windows, 3D softwares
if what you want is to be able to read and write documents that are compatible with microsoft word all you will need is openoffice.org
openoffice.org is a complete opensource office suite, it handles microsoft files great for me
but to answer some of your questions
VMware or (Virtual Machine) is where you will install windows inside your ubuntu install
(this requires that you have a copy of the windows to install)
or you could dual boot with windows
or you could use WINE (windows emulator)
wine is simply a free software that allows you to use some simple windows applications in linux
Re: Ubuntu <-> Windows, 3D softwares
