Harddrive crash, not detected

Hi
I had harddrive hiccups the past few days,
SMART data reported a few bad sectors, while fsck did not find/fix any for some reason.
Yesterday I had a system crash- afterwards I can't load my system, and the harddrive isn't recognized by the LiveCD at all. The bios itself recognizes the harddrive only after booting from power-off, and not after a reset.
I tried switching cables and changing controller settings (IDE to AHCI and back to IDE) but no avail.
Is there anything I can do before calling my disk dead?
