No internet on 12.04 alternate install
Hi, while this question may be a bit beyond the scope of this section, I am pretty new to linux so I figured I would post it here. Feel free to move it if you feel inclined to do so.
I installed 12.04 (32 bit) with the alt installer, and it doesn't seem to have installed any kind of NIC driver (both wired and wireless do not work)

when I start up with 12.04 live cd, the internet works fine.
Any help?
edit: I should also mention the follwing
Computer is a hp compaq 6715b with a broadcom bcm5787m netcard

Re: No internet on 12.04 alternate install
Welcome to the forums!
I'm afraid I have no experience with an alternate install, but my guess is that you simply don't have the drivers installed. You could probably install them by booting from the HD, inserting the CD, making sure the CD is enabled as a software source (In Software Center, Edit>Software Sources), and installing them from the CD.
Unfortunately, I'm not sure exactly which driver package you need...
Re: No internet on 12.04 alternate install
Hi ,
please open a terminal [Ctrl]+[Alt]+[t] keys combo and post the results* of this command
Code:
cat /etc/network/interfaces
*put the results between the brackets [code]Here[/code] .
Thanks

Whilst the process is different, the resulting install is, as far as I know, no different to the one you get from the GUI installer. I don't think the fact that it was the alternate installer makes that much difference to the problem.

I see. Thanks for clearing that up for me.
Re: No internet on 12.04 alternate install
thank you newb85
here are the results, NikTh
Code:
# This file describes the network interfaces available on your system
# and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).
# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
# The primary network interface
auto eth0
#NetworkManager#iface eth0 inet dhcp
# This is an autoconfigured IPv6 interface
iface eth0 inet6 auto
Re: No internet on 12.04 alternate install
Hi ,
open the file
Code:
gksudo gedit /etc/network/interfaces
and remove ALL lines EXCEPT these
Code:
# This file describes the network interfaces available on your system
# and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).
# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
Save the file and reboot your PC.
Thanks
Re: No internet on 12.04 alternate install
Alright, I did that. When booting up it tried configuring the network.
The network tab at the top right is no longer there.
Re: No internet on 12.04 alternate install
Hi ,
give the results of
Code:
nmcli nm status
cat /etc/network/interfaces
cat /etc/resolv.conf
lspci -nnk | grep -iA2 net
Thanks
