In the gnome-shell you can have a autohide, with unity I have not seen any. You can make it transparent though.

The auto-hide of the Unity launcher is switched off by default in 12.04. To switch it on go to ‘Control Gear –> System Settings’ then 'Appearance –> Behaviour' and set the auto-hide to on.
I also hated the top bar and switched to KDE...
The "behavior" setting mentioned applies to the Launcher, not the TOP bar, which I think is called the Menu Bar? Anyway, it's the top one, that has the gear on the top right corner within it. That's the one I want to autohide. I found the setting for the Launcher long ago, but I need a similar solution for the top bar.
Thanks!
Was there a solution to this question?
I followed the directions to 'dim' my top task bar; fun and I enjoy it.
Enjoyed the tip.
