Howto Install 32 bit Firefox with Flash w/sound and Java for AMD64
This howto is Obsolete
When I started this thread long ago on June 23, 2006 I never in would have thought it would last this long and help so many people. It may yet help someone. But for the majority of users this is outdated info. A 64bit Flash and Sun Java plugin are available. Granted they are still under development, but both seem to work as well if not better than the 32bit.
Its been fun, but I wont be actively supporting this thread any more. I encourage all 64bit users to move to the 64bit plugins asap.

Below left in place as a record in case someone may find it useful. Anyone still running Dapper , until its end of life date in 2011 may need this information
This script is a way to run the 32bit firefox on the amd64 version of Ubuntu. That way all plugins will work. The script works on Dapper, Edgy, Feisty, Gutsy, and Hardy.
Automated Install
This page will be making more than just Firefox available. To do that some changes were necessary.
First you need to make sure the repositories are enabled.
Second, install the Base-plugin script
The browser install files below can install other Firefox varients and are also used to upgrade to new versions.
You need to make sure the universe and multiverse are enabled before installing anything. If you are using Kubuntu look here.
Kubuntu go users may have to install ia32-libs-gtk through Adapt.
Browser Install Script (Updated 7/20/08 )
This script allows you to choose the browser you want to install from the ones on this page. It also lets you choose if you want to install the plugins by asking before the plugin is installed. You only have to run this script once. The script needs to be ran from the folder that extracts. That folder should also be on your Desktop. After running this script once you can install any of the other browsers below by double clicking on its deb file. :D
*****I have just created a new script with all new versions, including Swiftweasel. The new script will work on Dapper, Edgy, Feisty,Gutsy, and Hardy.
Firefox 2.0.0.17 (updated 10/06/08 )
This is the famous Firefox browser. The binaries are from Mozilla and not repackaged Ubuntu files. This Firefox32 .deb file will update previous installs to 2.0.0.17
The deb's below are for upgrading or adding Firefox as a second browser after running the install script. Do not install the deb by itself.
Firefox32 deb (Dapper-Feisty).
Firefox32 deb (Gutsy). Do not install this deb to Hardy Heron.
Firefox 3.0.3 (updated 10/06/08 )
This is the famous Firefox browser. The binaries are from Mozilla and not repackaged Ubuntu files. This Firefox32 .deb file will not update previous installs of the 2.0 series, it installs to a new folder. It is only available for Gutsy and Hardy.
The deb's below are for upgrading or adding Firefox as a second browser after running the install script. Do not install the deb by itself.
Firefox32 deb (Gutsy-Hardy).
Swiftweasel 3.0.3 (updated 10/10/08 )
This is a new project I recently was told about. It is an optimized build of the Mozilla Firefox code with free branding. The person running the project even made the deb file for me. :D Please go to its web site and take a look for yourselves.
The deb's below are for upgrading or adding Swiftweasel as a second browser after running the install script. Do not install the deb by itself.
This version is built on Ubuntu according to its build config. I plan on adding it to the install script as a main option. But you can download it now and install it if you want. There is now a version for Gutsy-Hardy and Feisty. The 3.0 version is not available for Dapper Drake. All 2.0 versions are available from the Swiftweasel site on Sourceforge.
Hardy
for Intel processors and one for AMD.
Gutsy
for Intel processors and one for AMD.
Feisty
for Intel processors and one for AMD.
Dapper- Dapper cant use 3.0, 2.0.0.14 is still avilable for it.
for Intel processors and one for AMD.
Repository
Swiftweasel also has a repository. After adding the repository if you installed debs with the script or downloaded them from this page. You may have to uninstall swiftweasel and reinstall it in synaptic to get automatic updates.
IceCat 2.0.0.12 (Updated 4/27/08 )
Due to some non free things that are in Firefox and restrictions Mozilla places on its binaries. The GNU.org has made a totaly free (as in beer and freedom) compile of the Firefox code. I have made deb files of it in case you want to use it. It is a lot faster than the normal Firefox builds. Originally named Iceweasel, it is now named IceCat.
The deb's below are for upgrading or adding Iceweasel as a second browser after running the install script.
IceCat32 2.0.0.12 (Dapper-Feisty) deb file.
IceCat32 2.0.0.12 (Gutsy-Hardy) deb file.
Flock 1.1.1 (updated 4/11/08 )
Flock is a fork of Firefox that adds a lot. It offers blogging and picture tools. It is released under the GPL and is Free as in freedom and as in beer.
The deb's below are for upgrading or adding Flock as a second browser after running the install script.
Flock32 1.1.1 (Dapper-Feisty) deb file.
Flock32 1.1.1 (Gutsy-Hardy) deb file.
Other Plugins
I will be adding other plugins over time. This will help make this a one stop howto for setting up 32 bit Firefox on AMD64.
Adobe Acrobat
Adobe Acrobat is a .pdf viewer. It is possible to have it open .pdf files inside Firefox. But its a memory hog, isn't free as in freedom, and isn't necessary as Ubuntu has pdf viewers installed by default. But it is free as in beer and some people need it in some cases.
First off download Adobe Acrobat and save it to your desktop or move it there if you have files saved to another location.
Code:
cd ~/Desktop
tar -xzvf AdobeReader_enu-7.0.5-1.i386.tar.gz AdobeReader
cd ~/Desktop/AdobeReader
sudo ./INSTALL
It will tell you how much space it will use and the path it will install to , press Enter
It will say the directory doesn't exist do you want it to make one, press y
It will ask if you want to install the plugin, press y
It will ask if you want the automatic install , press n
It will ask if you want to do a manual install, press y
It will give you 3 choices, pick 2. Perform user-specific installation (Mozilla/Firefox/Netscape)
It will install the plugin, and bring you back to the 3 choices, choose 3. Quit
The plugin is installed, restart Firefox. When you next try to open a pdf you may get an error, dont worry, click ok. Then it will ask you to agree to an EULA. Then it will open Acrobat up in Firefox.
If you already have Adobe Acrobat installed or something goes wrong try this. Make sure to change <username> to your username.
Code:
sudo cp -r -p /usr/local/Adobe/Acrobat7.0/Browser/intellinux/nppdf.so /usr/lib32/firefox32/plugins/
sudo chown -R <username>:users /usr/lib32/firefox32/plugins/nppdf.so
If you keep geting a "PPKLight" error, this command will solve it. The file is not nessasary and causes errors.
Code:
sudo rm /usr/local/Adobe/Acrobat7.0/Reader/intellinux/plug_ins/PPKLite.api
Alternate Java
The 1.6.0.6 java in the Hardy repositories may have issues logging into secure sites like banks. The 1.6.0.5 plugin from Sun is reported not to have these issues. To install it.
To install java from sun web page:
1. Uninstall the java package the script installs. In a terminal type
Code:
sudo apt-get remove sun-java6-jre ia32-sun-java6-bin
2. Download jre-6u5-linux-i586.bin, saving it to your desktop. If you save files in a different location you will need to edit the following commands, or move the file to your desktop.
3. Open a terminal and type
Code:
cd ~/Desktop
chmod 777 ./jre-6u5-linux-i586.bin
./jre-6u5-linux-i586.bin
3. Move the extracted folder
Code:
sudo mv ~/Desktop/jre1.6.0_05 /usr/local/java
4. Update the java plugin link
Code:
sudo rm -f /usr/lib32/firefox32/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so
sudo ln -s /usr/local/java/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so /usr/lib32/firefox32/plugins/
5. Restart Firefox 32
How to get Help
This Thread is over 100 pages long, it is quite old. In order to make the best use of my time I have decided to write some guidelines.. If you dont read this section and dont provide the information I may not be able to help you.
1. If you notice a problem after install close all browsers. Only start the 32bit version and see if the problem is still there.
2. Turn off all desktop effects (Beryl, compiz and compiz fusion) and restart the browser.
3. If the problem remains go over the manual howto steps to make sure everything is as it should be.
4. Apply the fixes in the common problems area.
If the problem continues. Do not PM me. Make a post. In the post make a short description of what isnt working. Also provide this information
1. What you are running (Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Xubuntu)
2. Your version of (Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Xubuntu)
3. The exact name of the tar.gz file you downloaded.
4. Open the Browser, click Help then About Firefox. Copy the bottom section starting with "Mozilla/5.0" and paste it into the reply.
5. Provide the reply to
Code:
ls -al /usr/lib32/firefox32/plugins
6. If its a Flash issue
Code:
/ls -al /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins
If you make any post be prepared to reply to it a few times while working out the issue. If you plan on disappearing and never replying, dont even post.
Common Problems (All Versions of Ubuntu)
Firefox
Before reporting any issue make sure that when you start 32bit Firefox that all other browsers are closed. Since 64bit and 32bit Firefox share a settings and profile folder, and only one profile can be open at one time. When you have 64bit firefox open, no matter what menu item or launcher you click a 64bit firefox window will open.
Errors
Error 1
Code:
ERROR: ld.so: object '/usr/lib32/libpangohack.so.0' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded: ignored.
Ignore this error.
If a plugin doesnt seem to work, and typing in the address bar of the browser dose not list them try this making sure to replace USERNAME in the following command with the name you use to login with.
Code:
sudo chown -hR USERNAME:users /usr/lib32/firefox32/plugins
Unmet Dependencies ia32-libs
Users with any of the following errors during install are directed to this post.
The ******* in rthe following error is a wildcard that represents any package name.
Code:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
********: Depends: ******** but it is not going to be installed
or
Code:
******** depends on ia32-libs; however:
Package ia32-libs is not installed.
Email Links
You must setup what program is called for some things. There is a post on the settings for email here, and this one is for making the "open" in the downloads window to work.
Printing
This post may be able to help users print from the browsers in this howto. Printing from 32bit browsers is not supported by this howto. If this link dose not help you print to a file, then open the file and print it.
Other Languages
The Firefox32 howto can not guarantee support for other languages. But Ubuntu user tkrisz has a solution to the languages problem that has worked so far. See his post for further details.
Sound
If you have tried all the other fixes for sound in flash. Close all browsers and open programs. Open a terminal and type in Then start Firefox and see if flash has sound. If it dose you may have to do this to make sure that other applications are not using the sound card.
KDE Appearance
Some themes may look bad, especially for users running KDE. This deb may help. After installing you will need to restart the browser. Also please realize, Firefox32 is created, built, and maintained by a user, not a developer. The whole purpose of Firefox32 is to make plugins work, not to make it blend into the system. That may be beyond my ability. Minor differences in the appearance of Firefox 32 vs the 64bit browser the developers completely integrated are to be expected.
If you would like to complain, please direct your complaints to the Ubuntu developers who refuse to offer a 32bit browser to 64bit users and expect 64bit users to use a browser without plugins.
Flash Sound
Finally to make sure sound works with flash use this command, make sure to change <username> to your username.
Code:
chown -R <username>:users /home/<username>/.macromedia
Then download and double click on this package to install it.
If you are still haveing problems try this
Code:
sudo ln -s /usr/lib/libesd.so.0 /usr/lib/libesd.so.1
and
Code:
sudo apt-get install alsa-oss
Feisty common problems
Connection
Some people who install the Fiesty script will find that the browser and other 32bit applications cant access the internet. This is because of ipv6 support. It is possible to disable ipv6 and everything will work (to me it seems faster to).
for ubuntu
1. gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/aliases
2.Comment out this line: alias net-pf-10 ipv6
3.Save the file
4.gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist
5.Add this line: blacklist ipv6
6.Save the file and restart your computer
for kubuntu
1.kdesu kate /etc/modprobe.d/aliases
2.Comment out this line: alias net-pf-10 ipv6
3.Save the file
4.kdesu kate /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist
5.Add this line: blacklist ipv6
6.Save the file and restart your computer
You must reboot for changes to take effect.
Errors
Another Feisty Error that I have seen a few times is this one.
Code:
Gtk-WARNING **: Locale not supported by C library.Using the fallback 'C' locale.
To fix it, Go Here and download the ia32-libs-gtk package, double click on the .deb file and let gdebi install it. Afterwards please rerun the install script as half the packages did not install because this dependancy was not installed.
Error 2
Code:
/usr/local/firefox32/firefox-bin: error while loading shared libraries: libgobject-2.0.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Go here and here to download the packages to make sure they are installed.
Appearance
Feisty will require you to do some extra setup. You do not have to do this if you are installing to Dapper or Edgy.
Download the gtk-qt-engine package to your desktop.
Open a terminal
Code:
cd ~/Desktop
sudo dpkg -x gtk-qt-engine_0.71~svn20070224-0ubuntu3_i386.deb ~/Desktop
sudo cp ~/Desktop/usr/lib/gtk-2.0/* /usr/lib32/gtk-2.0
sudo mkdir /usr/lib32/kde3
sudo cp ~/Desktop/usr/lib/kde3/* /usr/lib32/kde3
sudo rm -rfd ~/Desktop/usr
Hardy common problems
Connection issues
Since the 3.0 beta and Firefox32 share a settings folder. Those that install the 32bit Firefox32 bay have to disable ivp6. This is not an issue with the Swiftweasel packages.
In the address bar type In the filter type ipv6, right click on the line that says network.dns.disableIPv6 and select togle.
Restart the Firefox browser.
Problems with addon's
Firefox32 2.0.0.* and Firefox 3.0 are sharing a settings folder. Uninstall Firefox32 2.0.0.* . Use Swiftweasel32 or Firefox32 version 3.0.
Secure Applets
Some secure applets may need an extra package installed
sudo apt-get install lib32nss-mdns
Missing Icons for some themes
As pointed out by darthcloud. Open a terminal, enter the following.
Code:
gksudo gedit/usr/local/bin/firefox32-3
Change this line
linux32 /usr/local/firefox32-3/firefox $@
to
/usr/local/firefox32-3/firefox $@
Save the file and restart your browser.
The Old Howto
The old manual howto is avilable for download. It is no longer supported. It is hopelessly out of date and will not work on the newer releases of Ubuntu (Gutsy-Hardy) Use at your own risk. No support is avilable for it.

Re: Howto Install 32 bit Firefox with Flash w/sound and Java for AMD64
Tip: you could update it with installing the deb packages with "dpkg -i --force-architecture" (easier to uninstall and keeps the system consistent).
Flash : http://www.debian-multimedia.org/poo...0-0.0_i386.deb
Realplayer:
http://www.debian-multimedia.org/poo...7-0.0_i386.deb
Adobe reader 7.0.8:
http://www.debian-multimedia.org/poo...8-0.0_i386.deb
Adobe reader plugin:
http://www.debian-multimedia.org/poo...8-0.0_i386.deb
The java 1_5_0_06 deb is in the ubuntu repo. I have not found a 1_5_0_07 deb yet; it should be arround... if someone has a link please post it :)

Yes, you can remove the packages with dpkg -r
Marillat always tries to have the latest versions of the software.

Code:
cd ~/Desktop
sudo bash
chmod 777 ./jre-1_5_0_07-linux-i586.bin
./jre-1_5_0_07-linux-i586.bin
You will have to agree to the EULA, then it will extract to your desktop.
We will now install it
Code:
mkdir /usr/local/java32
cp -r -p ./jre1.5.0_07/* /usr/local/java32
cd /usr/local/firefox32/plugins/
ln -s /usr/local/java32/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so ./
Restart Firefox and go
HERE to test Java.
If your browser locks up verifying this will fix it. Change <username> to your username.
Code:
sudo chown -R <username>:users /home/<username>/.java
Nice writeup, but I find Java crashes after using your procedure on these chat sites once I log on... http://annies-haven.org/AHchat.html
http://www.hopeaz.com/Chat2.htm
the 64bit installs are even worse, they crash *before* I enter a password.
I'm beginning to think amd64 linux and Java might never work (its been over a year now)

Re: Howto Install 32 bit Firefox with Flash w/sound and Java for AMD64
I had to register to login, sorry , but you are right it crashes on login.
I dont know why but I will look into it.
Just a question, but you do know those applets connect to IRC chat servers? Chatx is a program designed to connect to those servers and is available through synaptic. You would have to ask them for the server address and other info , but it may be possible to access the chat rooms that way.

Thanks for looking into this (and sorry about the registration- I forgot about that). I will try to install chatx to see what it does. I'm not sure I'll be successful with the server address though.
I appreciate the help,

I couldn't find chatx in synaptic. Is it in a special repository?
Thanks

Re: Howto Install 32 bit Firefox with Flash w/sound and Java for AMD64
I could not get this to work with flash, plus there were some problems with your instructions.
First off, I was copying and pasting your commands and at the point in red...
Code:
cd ~/Desktop
tar -xzvf firefox-1.5.0.4.tar.gz firefox
sudo mkdir /usr/local/firefox32
cd ~/firefox
sudo cp -r -p ./* /usr/local/firefox32/
I had a problem, because no firefox directory had been created in my home directory, but instead it was on my desktop, so that should be cd firefox, or cd ~/Desktop/firefox
Then when I was actually trying to install Flash, I never had the option to change the directory. I was told that it was going to install it to /home/<username>/.mozilla and all I had for options were Yes, No, or Quit. And if I selected No, it just repeated over and over.
So right now I do have a working 32 bit Firefox install, but no Flash.
EDIT: Ok, so I figured out that you need a sudo before the last line of the flash install line, otherwise it can't install to anywhere but your home directory.
Just thought I'd point that out.
Everything works great now.

Re: Howto Install 32 bit Firefox with Flash w/sound and Java for AMD64
Sound still doesn't work for me after I did:
Code:
sudo chown -R berticus:users /home/berticus/.macromedia
Well, not exactly like that. Obviously I used my real username.... Anyway, the sound still doesn't work...

Please open your home folder, Click Edit, then Preferences in the menu. in the View tab, click the box next to Show hidden and backup files, then close it. Close the home folder, open it up again. Find .macromedia and try to open it.

Re: Howto Install 32 bit Firefox with Flash w/sound and Java for AMD64
I checked and rechecked .macromedia's permission, and it's belongs to me and it's under the users group. I also chmoded the whole thing to 777, and the sound still won't come out. Sound does work for me. I've checked it with other files.

What sites are you visiting that do not have sound?

I'm checking out youtube to test it all out. But I've stumbled some games, and they also don't produce sound.

Would you please go to /usr/local/firefox32/plugins and check and see if the flashplayer and libflashplayer belong to you?

OK, think I fixed it by uncommenting some repos in /etc/apt/sources.list:

deb-src http://nz.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper main restricted

XChat is an IRC chat program. You cant use the web page address for the chat room server. The pages you linked to before have forums. You might want to post there, expalin that you have problems accessing the chat on the web page, and ask them for the chat servers address.

I have done a little more investigation. Flash uses oss where other programs use asla. This

This worked perfectly, untill I restarted. After I restarted it was the exact same as Firefox 64-bit. I know the pointer is selected for the 32 bit version.

I like the new scripts. You're getting better and better! One thing though. You're so throrough that your script deletes itself, resulting in an error. It is of course a harmless error, but perhaps you should warn people. Perhaps just before the rm commands:
Code:
echo "You will now see an error, this error is because the script is deleting itself and is harmless."
(The error is: sudo: Unable to get working directory)
Other than that, it's great. This should definately be a sticky.

Thanks, I'm learning a lot, I just started the shell scripts a few days ago and I'm real happy with how they work so far. I taught myself a little php so I figured shell scripts cant be that difficult.
Yes, I delete the folder. Because it becomes a root folder and is hard to delete. You cant just send it to the trash. Ill add the line to the bottom of the script.

What stopped working when you restarted? If you are saying the 64bit version of Firefox took over its possible you are using the wrong launcher.
This howto doesn't replace the 64bit version. It adds the 32bit version. That's why the howto has you create a launcher on your desktop. You can drag that launcher to a taskbar and delete the one for 64bit firefox that is there.
The 64bit version is still in the Application menu, it will still launch if you open a html file on your desktop unless you select open with other application and choose firefox32.

Re: Howto Install 32 bit Firefox with Flash w/sound and Java for AMD64
I know it adds the 32-bit version, I'm saying the 32-bit is now exactly like the 64-bit version. I ran the file /usr/local/firefox32/firefox in the terminal and all it did was launch the 64-bit version.
-Ryan H
Edit: I used your installer and it installed everything perfectly. :D Only it currupted the application installer. The one for downloading updates. I reinstalled it via
Code:
sudo apt-get install -f
, but I'm not sure what your script did to it.

Re: Howto Install 32 bit Firefox with Flash w/sound and Java for AMD64
Hi Kilz with your killing HOW-TO!
Two question though.
1) Do you know what causes the error shown in this picture:
http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k2...blem_small.png
I mean, is there a way I can make the 'catalogue' appear in front of the flash? I believe this is the correct thing to happen, since on some options one can not see the various choices that are available because they are 'behind' the flash movie.
2) I have Acrobat Reader installed, but unfortunately I can not find the Browser directory you have in your manual:
Code:
dimis@mypc:~$ which acroread
/usr/bin/acroread
dimis@mypc:~$ cd /usr/bin
dimis@mypc:/usr/bin$ ls -l acroread
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 36 2006-07-14 18:21 acroread -> ../lib/Adobe/Acrobat7.0/bin/acroread
dimis@mypc:/usr/bin$ cd /usr/lib/Adobe/Acrobat7.0/
dimis@mypc:/usr/bin$ cd /usr/lib/Adobe/Acrobat7.0/
dimis@mypc:/usr/lib/Adobe/Acrobat7.0$ ls -l
total 12
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 2006-07-14 18:21 bin
drwxr-xr-x 11 root root 4096 2006-07-14 18:21 Reader
drwxr-xr-x 5 root root 4096 2006-07-14 18:21 Resource
dimis@mypc:/usr/lib/Adobe/Acrobat7.0$
So my question is: What do you suggest I should do if I want the plugin? Perhaps uninstalling Reader and re-installing through your HOW-TO?
Thank you in advance,
- dimis -

Re: Howto Install 32 bit Firefox with Flash w/sound and Java for AMD64
1)I have that happen to me to. I wish I knew why it dose it. I have it happen on the ATI drivers page and the Chicago Cubs mlb site.
2) Its possible you installed the acrobt reader.deb file with a sudo dpkg --force-architecture -i. Its possible to do the same thing with the plugin. Download the acrobat plugin deb file. and save it to your desktop.
Code:
cd ~/Desktop
sudo dpkg --force-architecture -i mozilla-acroread_7.0.1-0.0.ubuntu1_i386.deb
Then you will have a Browser folder with the plugin at /usr/lib/Adobe/Acrobat7.0/Browser/intellinux/nppdf.so
Then just edit the cp command and finish that section.

Re: Howto Install 32 bit Firefox with Flash w/sound and Java for AMD64
Thanks Kliz, followed the HowTo yesterday to get 32 bit Firefox with Flash Java and Real Player plugins. I was doing it through KDE on top of Ubuntu and it worked like a dream.
If you are using Gnome you probably don't get this glitch though. I like to leave the browser open on the desktop when I shut down and in KDE it's there again when I log in. However with both versions of Firefox on the machine it's 64 bit that gets restored.
Guess I'll have to post on the Kubuntu forum.

You are correct, when I close down gnome, windows left open do not open again when you log in. But there is a problem of opening html on your desktop, for some reason it will default to the 64bit version. If you dont need the 64 bit version. A work around for that is to delete the contents of /usr/lib/firefox and replace it with the contents of /usr/local/firefox32. I bet that would solve your problem to.

Re: Howto Install 32 bit Firefox with Flash w/sound and Java for AMD64
This is strange I believe. I downloaded and installed the plugin for Acrobat and now is the default option for firefox32. Yet, whenever I select to view a pdf file with acroread it does not open a window with the pdf file.
By the way, I tracked down the following when I open firefox from a shell:
Code:
$ firefox32
ERROR: ld.so: object '/usr/lib32/libpangohack.so.0' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded: ignored.
ERROR: ld.so: object '/usr/lib32/libpangohack.so.0' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded: ignored.
ERROR: ld.so: object '/usr/lib32/libpangohack.so.0' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded: ignored.
ERROR: ld.so: object '/usr/lib32/libpangohack.so.0' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded: ignored.
I changed permissions of the /usr/lib32/libpangohack.so.0.0 (where the link points) to 666 and still the error arises. But I really don't care about this.
Anyway, in order to fix my acrobat-plugin problem, is there a way of uninstalling those "forced-architecture" installations, since I can't find them with Synaptic?
Thanks again for your time (and of course the detailed HOW-TO)

Hi
Good because the "object cant be preloaded" errors are best ignored. It has nothing to do with why the acrobat plugin isnt working.
There are a number of reasons the plugin may not be working. Are you sure the /usr/lib/Adobe/Acrobat7.0/Browser/intellinux/nppdf.so file exists?
Did you do both commands
Code:
sudo cp -r -p /usr/lib/Adobe/Acrobat7.0/Browser/intellinux/nppdf.so /usr/local/firefox32/plugins/
and this one changing <username> for your username?
Code:
sudo chown <username>:users /usr/local/firefox32/plugins/nppdf.so
Anyway, if you want to uninstall the plugin package the command is.
Code:
sudo dpkg -r mozilla-acroread

I tried using your script and while I was able to install a lot of code to /usr/home/Firefox32. A lot of it was everything I had in my downloads folder. What is the command to remove everything and start over? Thanks

The script installs firefox and plugins to /usr/local/firefox32 The command to dete it is.
Code:
sudo rm -rfd /usr/local/firefox32
If you installed it to a different folder you will have to edit. You might want to run the automated setup script to avoid problems.

Try this, change YourUserName to your user name.
Code:
sudo chown -R YourUserName:users /usr/local/firefox32/

Re: Howto Install 32 bit Firefox with Flash w/sound and Java for AMD64
Thanks, I removed the failed install and was able to install Firefox 32 using your script. Just have to remember to do it from the desktop. My problem was trying to do in the install from my downloads directory. Swept everything up in the directory and copied it to /usr/local/Firefox. :D
Now if I could just figure out how to get my HP Deskjet F340 (one of those litle usb combo machines -- scanner, printer, copier) up and running life with the AMD64 would be great. The computer identifies the machine. When I install the driver suggested, and try to print a test page, nothing.
There seems to be some sort of utility available in the synaptic manager, but the repository doesn't seem to be on line this afternoon. I guess I ought to transfer this comment elsewhere.

You could drag the launcher into the taskbar to add it and delete the other one if you want. You could also use the alacarte menu editor to edit the command of firefox in the menu to firefox32 so that starts the 32bit version.

Re: Howto Install 32 bit Firefox with Flash w/sound and Java for AMD64
Hi Kilz,
Forgive me for my late feedback. I guess too much work will kill me .. :(
Anyway, I suspect that on my latest post all the problems existed because I had forgotten to include the commands regarding nppdf.so. Unfortunately, after a long day I followed all of the commands on your post sequentially. But this meant, that in the end ... I removed acrobat! :p
As a result, I followed all commands that you provide on the first page and everything went smoothly. Ofcourse I had a problem with PPPKLight, but with your final command this was resolved. :)
Thanks again for your time and patience,
Regards,

Re: Howto Install 32 bit Firefox with Flash w/sound and Java for AMD64
It was the install that had to be launched from Desktop. I didn't pay enough attention to your script.
I have Firefox32 all set up now.
You know this Ubuntu is supposed to be an easy version of Linux. Your scripts are great, but. . . .
What is most disturbing is the sudden difficulty I seem to be having with my little HP printer. The 32 bit v. 64 bit stuff makes sense, but I had a devil of a time with my old deskjet with my old computer running Breezy. Not so with earlier versions of Linux. Cups used to be one of those packages that just plain worked. Things seem to have gone backward.
I will work it out, I always do, but I have to say that new desktop users are going to be frustrated.

Re: Howto Install 32 bit Firefox with Flash w/sound and Java for AMD64
In an effort to install my printer, I thought that maybe I should just reinstall Ubuntu. Why not following Kilz's scripts I had gotten Firefoxt32 to install properly. Life was good. I could do it again.
Wrong. I reinstalled Ubuntu using the alternate disk and found that I mistakenly installed the wrong version of unbuntu 64. Apparently I installed the server version. I spent most of last night hunting down lots and lots of missing software. Finally, I threw up my hands and reinstalled again. This time I had the right version but still some of the packages were missing. I had to hunt them down and am just now back to where I was 24 hours ago.
All of this is to suggest that many of the problems I have read in this thread are similar to those I experienced last night. I suspect a comment as to the installed version of Ubuntu64 might be in order.

Re: Howto Install 32 bit Firefox with Flash w/sound and Java for AMD64
I can't use my printer. Frankly, it is frustrating. I have tried both a usb deskjet and an old cannon bjc-3000. Both have been recognized. The printer install recommended a driver. Neither of the printers would print a thing. I have tried everything I can think of to get a printer to work. Nothing.
As to your scripts, after I reinstalled the first time I didn't have several of the programs. Linux32, gsfonts-x11, alsa-osso come to mind. All are out of date packages. I reinstalled again, and I had them. Maybe I am wrong but I think that a lot of the programs needed for the scripts reside on a server someplace and are called as part of the generic install process. Ubuntu's servers were really slow yesterday. Maybe they timed out? Heck I don't know, but when I tried to install Firefox after the first reinstall of ubuntu, the script didn't work properly on several different levels. Messing around I got it to work, but only after I paid close attention to the process.
The printer thing is frustrating. I am almost ready to chuck ubuntu. I can't even use the cups administrative package.

Yes, but at least you dont have a lexmark, I did and found the only way to use it was to hook it up to my wifes computer(windows) and then share it. I then set it up as a network printer in cups.
Ill do a look around for a bjc-3000 howto for you. Maybe we can get one working.
Some of the repository servers were offline yesterday. So it may have been hit or miss downloading things, and the scripts download/use apt-get.
Edit, I went looking and found this page, it linked to this page that may help you.

Firefox 32 appearing ugly
Hi there, first, congratulations for the great howto, everything worked 100%, even for a completely newbie to linux as me.. now, I have a question. I'm using Kubuntu on amd64, the newly installed Firefox 32 bits has an ugly appearance, with some contours on the different parts of the window, very different from the original Firefox 64 that came installed.. how can I fix this? Is it using some different library (GTK for example??).. any help would be appreciated!
Thanks,
Keko

Nope, the 32bit version this howto/scripts installs dosent replace the firefox already on your system. You can replace it if you want to, but it isnt nessasary.

Sorry , I have been unable to make things as seamless for the Kubuntu version as Ubuntu.

Liferea is in the repositories. You can install it with Synaptic. Take a look here to learn about how to use Synaptic. You will also have to enable the universe repositories.

Re: Howto Install 32 bit Firefox with Flash w/sound and Java for AMD64
Hello Kilz, thanks for this detail howto.
However, I am experiencing problem with flash at adobe.com whereby it stayed on top of tab menu that I pointed with mouse. Exact same problem as someone else few pages back. Is there any solution for this already??
I also made launcher for firefox32 on top taskbar - next to e-mail icon (I also got an entry on applications - internet - firefox32 webbrowser
Running firefox 32 is no problem at all. But if I click the icon for firefox 64, it also launched firefox32 and of course java/flash/mplayer are properly displayed as it supposed to be.
Samething happenned if I click applications-internet-firefox webbrowser (i.e original firefox 64). Any idea of what causing this?
EDIT.
I just turned on my computer, strange enough, now all icons launched firefox 64 (V.1.5.0.5). What I installed was firefox32 v 1.5.0.6.
Check the java page & sure enough it could not be displayed properly

That is only because of me. Up untill my posts the creator was more intrested in his traffic and google income and refused to make installers. In fact he is still insisting on a link to a download page and not one to a direct download. I write install scripts, that stipulation makes them impossible. I think I will go on using my own .deb files. Since they are foss, I can.

Re: Howto Install 32 bit Firefox with Flash w/sound and Java for AMD64
Thanks for the great install script. I have been really disapointed at the lack of Multi-Media options for the AMD64, but this fixes a lot of my needs. I made one little change to your swiftfox script, so that if ~/Desktop/sf-plugins does not exist it creates it instead of croaking.
Here is the patch:
Code:
1a2,4
>
> DIR=~/Desktop/sf-plugins
>
3c6,10
< cd ~/Desktop/sf-plugins
---
>
> if [ ! -d $DIR ]; then
> mkdir $DIR
> fi
> cd $DIR
Thanks again

The launcher command should be firefox32 not firefox 32.

Thanks, I think the sf-1.5.0.6-2-plugins.tar.gz eztracts to a sf-plugins directory. But I have made the changes in case someone removes the script from it, deletes the folder its in, or extracts it to someplace other than the desktop.

Re: Howto Install 32 bit Firefox with Flash w/sound and Java for AMD64
Anyone have any idea why the mplayer plugin will supposedly download 99% of a file, then just hang? When I right click the plugin in Firefox and select play, mplayer spits out the error "mplayer execv: no such file or directory."

You may need to install mplayer, While the script should do that its possible it couldnt download it for some reason. Mplayer is alaiable in Synaptic or use
Code:
sudo apt-get install mplayer
