12.04 How do I easily change default applications?
I can't believe I've spent an hour trying to figure out how to simply change a default application in 12.02.
Before (10.10) it was simple to set/change this in Nautilus. Choosing Open with and using a different application doesn't give me the option to change. Can't do it in Ubuntu Tweak anymore (and Tweak really sucks now).
In 12.04 you can choose System Setting>Display and change 5 types of file. (CD, DVD, photos, music, software).
All I want to do is change .cbr from Evince to Comix.
Holy ****, why are simple things getting hard in Ubuntu?
This question pertains to this type of question generally, how to set/change the application for file-types outside the basic 5 listed.

Click on the file, go to "properties";

Re: 12.04 How do I easily change default applications?
Isn't there an "add" option at the bottom of the "Open With" menu?
You can manually change your associations, as this link shows, to set .cbr files to open with Comix.
How to manually add .cbr files to Comix:
This will find the Evince association
It should look something like evince.desktop
Code:
sudo find / -iname evince.desktop
Next you'll copy your Evince settings over to Comix
Code:
sudo cp /usr/share/applications/evince.desktop /usr/share/applications/comix.desktop
Now edit the file comix.desktop and change the following lines:
Exec=evince %U
Name=Evince
TO
Exec=comix %U
Name=Comix
If you are unhappy with your desktop environment (I assume it is Unity), I'd recommend looking into xfce4: It is a wonderful, easy to configure window manager you can try out simply by installing and logging in.
Re: 12.04 How do I easily change default applications?
Like you've already probably tried, you can find a .cbr file in Nautilus, right click and choose Properties, click the Open With tab, and click where it says "Show other applications". If Comix is in the list, you can set it as the default. Up until Ubuntu 11.10, you used to be able to add a custom command for apps not in the list. When they switched to Gnome3, that disappeared because it's not built into Gnome3 yet.
I'm surprised Comix doesn't show up in the list, because it shows up in mine. But if it doesn't show up in the list, you can add it manually through the terminal. Please redo my first paragraph and make sure that Comix isn't in the list before proceeding. Open your terminal, and CD to a folder that has a .cbr file. Then type
Code:
mimeopen -d filename.cbr
Substituting the name of your file. In the menu that it shows, enter whatever number says "Other" to enter a custom command. Then in your custom command, this should work
After you do this, Comix should show up in the Open With app list in Nautilus. Again, I'm surprised it's not already there.

Re: 12.04 How do I easily change default applications?
Thanks forrestcupp, that worked! I'm on xubuntu 12.04 and I had the same issues. All kind of crazy stuff shows up among possible applications but neither kile for .tex nor evince for .pdf.
I really thought we were past this kind of hacking, but to be quite honest: This is the most troublesome installation in years! 10.04 was a mere afternoon, with 12.04 I'm in the second day (including all the customisations). What the frog.
