The Longest Journey, various issues (steam, 1999)

I got the dreamfall package which includes the original TLJ, and ran into problems running it. So, I removed steam and wine, gave everything a fresh install, but I'm still encountering problems.
Under my normal wine/steam installation, everything runs fine, apart from 3d models not being rendered.
I then found this post (Rafael Martins):

Following those instruction the models render and the game works perfectly up until the main menu. However, when I start a new game, the audio dies.

Switching the audio options around in winecfg has no effect (System default, default and HDA Intel PCH - ALC892 Digital), and I can't find any straight forwards guides on how to switch between alsa and oss.

Not having audio isn't exactly game breaking (and is easier to deal with than having no characters), but missing out on the voice acting and music is a bit bitter.
