NVIDIA drivers not working

Help! I have a NVIDIA Geforce FX 5500 graphics card hooked into DVI to a 19" standard def monitor. After I install the driver I reboot and after the ubuntu splash screen loads the screen goes blank. I have tried loading the driver using the hardware drivers utility that is built in, I have tried loading the driver using EnvyNG, I have tried to load the driver in CLI. Nothing, the best results are that I got Green vertical lines after the CLI install. I have tried to hooking up my monitor to the VGA port and still nothing.
My set up is:
MSI MK8-939A Motherboard
AMD Athlon 64 3200+ 2.0gz
1.5GB DDR PC3200 400mhz RAM
Geforce FX 5500 DVI/VGA 256MB RAM
Dual Boot Ubuntu 9.04 64bit/Win XP Home SP3
