where is option to try before install?
I'm in the process of installing Xubuntu 12.04 on an older laptop, a Dell Inspiron 700m with Windows XP. I know there are potential issues with the graphics card so I want to try before I install.
After I select my language, my menu choices are:
- install Xubuntu
- check disc for defects (which I did, no problems)
- test memory
- boot from first hard drive disk
- rescue a broken system
Rather than install yet (and since there is no "try" option), I boot to XP, but there is no desktop icon to try Xubuntu. Indeed, I cannot figure out how to get the DVD to run from Windows.
How do I try without installing?
Re: where is option to try before install?
Buntu Bunny; Hi !
I expect that that option to be the default IF no key is engaged after booting up the installDVD. Try this and advise.
Just try'n to help <==BDQ
Re: where is option to try before install?
Hi Bashin-om,
When I boot up with the DVD, the first thing I get is the select language screen, then the menu options with function keys at the bottom of the page. I'm not touching the keyboard at the time, but I'm not getting a "try" in the menu.
This was an alternative download (torrent), does that make a difference? Shouldn't I still have a live cd (or dvd)?
Re: where is option to try before install?
OK. From the Xubuntu website under system requirements:

To install or try Xubuntu within the Desktop/Live CD, you need 256 MB of memory. Installing with the Alternative CD requires only 64 MB.
I'm taking it to mean that the alternative CD does not offer the try option(?) I did the torrent download as it was the recommended method, but I really do need to try first. I'll try a mirror download as see what happens.
Re: where is option to try before install?
After you select "Install" at the isolinux menu, it'll boot up and give you a "try" option. (It does on regular Ubuntu at least, and I don't see why Xubuntu would be any different.)

Catlover2, thanks! I'm just afraid of getting the install started before I can check to make sure I won't have graphics problems.

The alternate iso does not have a live desktop option,
You will need to download the desktop iso.

That's what I figured. I'm downloading the desktop iso right now. Thanks Arpanaut.
