I have an older Compaq Presario S5140WM that has successfully run Ubuntu 7.04, Ubuntu 7.10 and Xubuntu 8.04 flawlessly. The system has a 2GHz Celeron processor and 768MB RAM. I tried booting the 8.10 Live CD the other day, and after a seemingly normal boot process ended up with a black screen with a mouse cursor. I have used the CD before, so I believe that it is good. I then went ahead and rebooted and installed anyway from the Live CD boot menu on a separate partition formatted as Ext3. The system now boots to the logon prompt, I enter my username and password, and the system continues to boot. After about 15 seconds the hard drive stops being accessed, the display is orange with a mouse cursor that moves with the mouse, and the system appears to be hung.

Any ideas? 8.04 continues to work perfectly.

TIA, Bill.
