I was wondering whether it's possible to have a terminal that's always open, sort of lodged in your desktop in GNOME? So that the terminal is a part of your desktop like the panels. I think this function is built in in some other window managers, and I think it's really handy seeing as how I use the terminal a great deal.

thank you :)

p.s. I was also wondering whether there's a key combination so that a small terminal appear, in which you could write some commands like "xkill" and after the command has occurred, it would shut down?

you can press Alt+F2 to run a command.

in xfce you the default shortcut for xkill is Crtl+Alt+Esc.
i'm not sure if it works in gnome.

Ah thank you very much for the desktop terminal link.

And about the alt+F2 thing, I knew about that one but for some reason I thought it was just to open programs. >.< I even opened the terminal with alt+F2 just to write xkill in the terminal at times. Could've saved me the hassle and just typed it into the "run command" window. Well, just goes to show how thick I really am :)

I use tilda (http://tilda.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Main_Page) for roughly that purpose. I have it configured to be transparent and use the whole screen and have it launch each time I log in. It can be hidden/shown by pressing a key. Very much recommended.

Aah, yes. You were a bit too late with that ;) the first tutorial didn't work in the end, so after searching for "terminal desktop transparent" or something like that I stumbled upon http://polishlinux.org/apps/cli/tilda-transparent-terminal-on-your-desktop/ this website, I tried the tutorial, installed Tilda and it works like a charm. :D thanks anyway!

Just to provide another option, you can also set one or more Terminal applets/widgets and have them transparent and/or stick across multiple desktops and/or on the widget layer.
