Hi. I'm trying to fix my brothers laptop. It's a Medion MD 98300
"# AMD Turion™ 64 X2 Dual-Core Mobile Technology TL-50
# Huge 120 GB hard drive capacity
# Massive 1,024 MB DDR2 SDRAM memory
# NVIDIA® GeForce® Go 6150 graphics card" <-- Copy from medion.de of the specs.

My problem is that I can't install anything on it. I have tried Windows XP (yeah, I'm sorry :P), but it will not partition/format the hard drive. I know the difference between these, but with the XP installation it's like it does both at once. It just stops and tells me there something wrong. Not what's wrong.

Trying to install ubuntu (8.10) it's stops when it's trying to create the ext3 file system.

I don't have the slightest idea what wrong - could anyone tell me what's wrong or what to do in order to find out what's wrong or how to fix it? I'm really annoyed with this. I kinda think there's something wrong with the hard drive, but I'm a hardware idiot...

Thanks in advance.
