Hello,
i am trying to install ubuntu 8.10 on my laptop via cd, and after i select language and choose "Install ubuntu", ubuntu loads and once it's done loading i get a black screen with a white box in the middle. The white box moves as a mouse when i move my mouse. I even tried waiting 30 minutes and nothing happened. Any ideas?
Thanks

*Edit: I am using windows vista home premium 32 bit

Make sure the installation CD is not %#$ked up. CHeck the md5 sums, and I think there's even an option on the live CD to check itself. Other than that I can't be of any use to you, I'm still having problems on my own installation. Sorry.

What are your system specs?

Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T9400 @ 2.53GHz
4.00 GB of Ram
NVIDIA Geforce 9300M GS
Realtek audio card (dunno which one)

it's based on ACPI x86

I just checked, and right after it has loaded "ubiquity", it gives me the black never-ending screen

Did you try installing is Safe Graphics mode (I think it is still an option, look at the very first menu)? That might help. The other thing to try is the Alternate Install CD. It installs the same Ubuntu, but uses a text-based interface that gets around a lot of the graphics problems that you see with the Live CD.
