Dressing up for the holidays

Greetings, everyone!

In the spirit of fun, for the holiday season, I invite you to join me in dressing up your avatar. Let's keep this fun and frivolous, please.

I'm wearing a Santa hat. You can use holly, snowmen, Christmas trees, a Menorah, a Nativity, whatever, but please don't go overboard into offensive (or easily offended) mode.

If this makes you feel grumpy, please read this before posting (http://matthewhelmke.net/wordpress/2007/12/23/holiday-greetings-and-hyper-sensitivity/).

Technically, political and religious stuff is not generally welcome on the forums, but if you can keep your avatar directly related to the season and celebratory in nature, that will fulfill the spirit of what we are trying to prevent, which is in-your-face arguments or people feeling forced to follow other people's belief systems while feeling unwelcome themselves.

I'm also okay with avatars related to Yule, Winter Solstice, Kwanzaa, Festivus, and so on. Anyway, you all get the idea. Let's have a fun, inviting, and friendly time of celebration.

I've never used GIMP in my life, and I just figured out how to remove the background from my Christmas avatar. I'm so proud of myself.

Try this. Find a santa hat. Save it as a gif. Add a transparent layer. Remove everything from the picture (i.e. make it transparent) except the hat itself. Copy/paste the hat with transparent background into your avatar.

That's pretty simplified, but hopefully it will get you started. :)

EDIT: As a side note, I went back and re-worked my "regular" avatar. A thing worth doing is a thing worth doing right, so in that spirit I made a multi-layer Gimp document with the eye and surrounding skin in the background and a duplicate of that -- minus the eyeball itself -- as the top layer. Then, sandwiched in-between are whatever specialty images I want to use. Normally it's the Ubuntu logo, but by request, I have now generated the "Christmas Tux" version. The Christmas Tux image itself is courtesy CrystalXP.net (http://tux.crystalxp.net).
