Strange mouse behaviour in Ubuntu 8.10

Sorry nobody's replied to you yet. Generally, that just means your experience is rare so nobody has any idea how to help yet.

I don't really know what the problem is, but I'd have suspected X or your video driver. have you tried switching off desktop effects, and have you tried switching to the free nv driver?
