Looking through my Linux mag I see an advert for the GP2X handheld which looks really interesting and better still it runs all open source, has anyone got one of these and if they have are they worth the money?

They are advertised for only £124.99 which is bloody good value.

Look forward to your responses.

I preordered mine some time in November.

Looking through the GP2X forums, it seems that a lot of people are happy, and some firmware updates fixed/will fix a battery problem the units have been having.

Some really cool stuff has come out for this handheld such as a PSX emulator (http://www.gp32x.com/board/index.php?showtopic=22737), some cool homebrew games (http://www.gp2x.de/cgi-bin/cfiles.cgi?0,0,0,0,9), and some other emulators (http://www.gp2x.de/cgi-bin/cfiles.cgi?0,0,0,0,5).

The screen is terrible- Zauruses have VGA screens!

Mine is running pdax with xfce4 as the desktop manager.

And zauruses have rechargeable batteries- and just rock. (Lots of $$ though- buy older and used!!)

I think the initial batch of these have a few firmware related problems. I'd wait a while until they work out the kinks. I think it's not out in America yet anyways, hopefully by the time it comes out they will have fixed it.

That said, it looks really sweet. I have been looking at this for a while, and will probably get one later early next year.

I was going to get one but opted instead or a Nintendo DS because it's silly to buy new hardware as soon as it hits the market.

Gp2x also has rechargeable batteries.
"AA", or "R6", batteries is NOT, despite what many people seem to think, equal to "non rechargeable batteries". There are lots of good rechargeable >2500 mAh AA's avaliable.

Love the Wikipedia page for it:

Anyone got any tales of the gp2x to share? I was a big fan of the gp32 (its predecessor) and wondering if there's any nifty linux related info for it....

btw I much prefer AA batteries to built in ones - in 10 years time you'll still be able to source AA's!

i have a gp2x and love it for exactly what it is: a linux runnin' handheld w/ a joystick, made in korea!

the community around the thing is great--i've been having a lot of fun with other peoples programs ... next step is to set up a dev enviornment on my ubuntu desktop and see what i can do.

I was looking at the PSP for a while but what put me off is that Sony closed the firmware more and more and I want to decide what's going on in my computers. And the PSP uses Sony's pro duo cards wich are _expensive_ compared to compact flash and sd. Then I found out about the GP2X and got really interested. Just a few things holding me back from buying one right now.

1 can i run java in it?

2 Is it any good for reading books and manga?

3 does it support .mkv?

I'm sure these things can be done but Sony makes it impossible on the PSP :( therefore GP2X seems to suit me more than the PSP. All the PSP has to show is wlan (can surf the web and chat with friends :D) and flashy graphics wich I don't really care about.

Maybe we should have another poll for PSP vs GP2X?

BTW Do Nintendo care about homebrew on the DS? I guess you have to have some special flasher for their cartridges but once you have that will it run whatever you want?

Update:

20 mins with google:

1 Yes, not Suns JVM though...

2 Yes!

3 nope :( never.

well I'm an old gp32'er but not got a 2x. they sound very cool and run all kinds of video, not sure why you'd want mkv in particular though.

As for Nintendo going for homebrew, I don't think thats how the big companies work- Sony and big N try to make their machines as closed off as possible for home devving, which is what makes the Gamepark gear stand out, being almost entirely homebrew driven. Personally I'd go for Gamepark's homebrew open source, but don't expect to run state of the art PSP type games on it.

But on the other hand - any console these days has some form of homebrew following, but it doesn't mean it's a straightforward user experience.
