I upgraded my system Firday night from 8.04 to 8.10 and all seemed to go OK.

However, I boot up and there was an error message (did not take down) and the system stopped booting at that point (black screen with the white writing). I then pressed esc on boot up the second time and went into the recovery screen where I clicked ubuntu 8.10, kernel 2.6.22-14-generic (recovery mode) and selected recover packages. This seemed to work however, now when I try to boot up I can log in but the screen remains blue and none of the desktop or my icons appear. This is also the case if I select ubuntu 8.10, kernel 2.6.22-14-generic. I have tried changing the login options from the login screen and nothing helps.

Any idea's how I can get my desk top to load up? As I hope that I have not lost everything.

don't create new threads on the same subject:

and don't hijack other threads either

This one was created as did not want to 'hijack' another persons thread and noticed that this section of the forum may be more 'directed' to what I need.

Oh and thanks for your help by the way, very useful, think it nearly helped me resolve the boot issue!!!
