View Full Version : [ubuntu] Bug reporting: what to do when an app crashes?

Fontforge is crashing on me. It simply goes away unexpectedly. The conditions seem to be consistent and reproducible, and the crash occurs with more than one font.

I intend to report this crash on the Launchpad system, but before I do, is there anything I can do to gather supplementary information? I'm thinking of a dump or a message display or a debug display: something fairly easy for me to invoke that would facilitate resolving the problem.

My question is actually more general than that. Is there some general post-crash procedure applicable to any and all applications, something built into Ubuntu?

As far as I can tell, Fontforge doesn't report its crashes via the net, and in any case this seems to be "unexpected termination" rather than a crash per se. (I hope I'm making sense.)

I heard that when you are not competent enought to recreate crashes and submit the data information for previous bugs that have been reported, to just subscribe to the bug that has already been submitted. By doing that you are letting the developers know that there are other users with the same or similar experiences. Is that true?

Well, yes and no. If you have no additional info, subscribing does it. If you have additional info, maybe best is to ask how to gather the data (I'm not sure I can help you all the way through, but others will) and comment in the bug report, or open a new one if need be.
