Illusive Beautiful Desktop Backgrounds

I've been on a mission lately to customize my desktop and interface to the fullest extent of my technical know-how. It seems that whenever I see screenshots of desktops, there more often than not have these breathtaking backgrounds, I have searched and pined for pictures of this nature and quality, with very few results.

I was just wondering where you find these stunning photos?

I also thought it might be useful as a thread as well.
