Ubuntu 8.04 won't logout, shutdown or reboot, unless i hit CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE

I have no ideas what has caused this, or how t fix it... any ideas? :confused:

when you hit ctrl+alt+backspace can you shutdown from the login screen

it used to happen to me but when in that screen it shutdown cant remember how i fixed it i will keep thinking for you but in the meantime try what i said

for ctrl+alt+backspace it is returing to gdm/kdm or rather it is called loggin off.u can type in the command 'shutdown" in the terminal,provided u r root u u type 'sudo shutdown"and it will work:):):):):):):):)

ok, i will ecplain better, i use the door icon on the top panel and select shutdown/logoff etc..
however it sort of sits there and does.... nothing until i push ctrl+alt+backspace
if i had pushed shutdown and i ctrl+alt+backspace it will shutdown
if i had pushed logout and i ctrl+alt+backspace it will logout

i dont really want to have to do ctrl+alt+backspace every time i want to shutdown/logoff.
