View Full Version : Your Operating System Progression

I was cleaning up files on my server, getting ready to add additional hard drive space, when I came across some screenshots of old Linux installs, dating back to 2002.

That got me thinking about my own personal operating system progression. For my own sanity I'm going to only include gui installations, I can't remember all the versions of DOS I might have gone through!

Desktop
Windows - 1991 to 1993
OS/2 - 1993 to 1997
Redhat - 1997 to 2000
Mandrake -2000 to 2002
Gentoo - 2002 to 2006
Fedora - 2006 to 2008
Ubuntu - 2008 to present

Server
Gentoo - 2003 to 2006
Centos - 2006 to 2008
Debian - 2008 to present

So, what's your operating system progression?

I've attached my oldest screenshot from 2002 (I wish I kept older ones), it's either Mandrake 9.0 or Gentoo, running what I think is WindowMaker

You know, it's kind of hard to write a "progression" when you've run things at different times, and/or in parallel with each other, and so on.

So, while I know this isn't *technically* what you've asked for, I'm going to separate this by OS platform.

Macintosh:
"Classic" Mac OS:
Mac OS 3.0 -> 3.2/4.1
Mac OS 5
Mac OS 6.0 -> 6.0.7
Mac OS 7.0 -> 7.0.1
Mac OS 7.1
Mac OS 8.0
Mac OS 8.1
Mac OS 8.5 -> 8.6
Mac OS 9.0
Mac OS 9.1 -> 9.2.2

Mac OS X:
10.0 (Very, very briefly. Yikes!)
10.1.0 - 10.1.2
10.2.0 - 10.2.8
10.3.0 - 10.3.9
10.4.0 - 10.4.11
10.5.0 - 10.5.5

MS-DOS:
5.0; 6.22

Windows:
Windows 3.1
Windows 95, original -> OSR2
Windows 98
Windows 98SE
Windows ME (relatively briefly)
Windows 2000 (darn, I almost wrote "2600"... :) )
Windows XP Home
Windows XP Pro, SP1 -> SP2
Windows Vista (couple months)

Linux:
Red Hat 4.2, 5 & 6 (just screwing around with it)
SuSE 6.4 (best documentation ever with any computer or software product!)
Mandrake 7.2, 8.1 & 9
Fedora Core 1 - 4 (still not a serious user of Linux)
Ubuntu 5.04; 6.10
Fedora 8, 9 (trying to switch)
Debian 3, upgraded to 4 (done to repurpose an old PowerMac G3 I've had for 11 years now into a headless server)
Ubuntu 8.04 (now a full-time Linux user)
Ubuntu 8.10 (and going strong!)

Amiga:
Workbench 1.33 (for about a year, got it with an A500, used it a few times to do titling work on personal videos)

Microsoft Windows 95 (Approximate dates):
1996 > 1998 (Pretty good OS, never really had a problem with it)

Microsoft Windows 98 (Approx. dates):
1999 > 2001 (Same as above)

Microsoft Windows 2000:
2001 > 2003 (My second favorite Windows OS, has never failed me.)

Microsoft Windows XP (Media Center && Pro, SP1 > SP3):
2001 > 2008 (Still have it on my computer but TBH I have never used it, by far Microsoft's best release (why do you think ive used it for 7 years? :) ))

Ubuntu 7.10 -> 8.10:
late-2007 > present (Part of a quad-boot, second fallback OS. Best OS I've ever used! I consider it my stepping stone to Linux)

Arch Linux:
2008 (October) > present (Again, part of a quad-boot. Currently my main OS, has taught me a lot)

Debian Lenny:
2008 (October) > present ('', first fallback OS, really awesome OS)

Here is a more detailed version of my OS journey, with test runs and honorable mentions:

The first computer I have ever used was the good ol Apple II with classic MS DOS, it was my first home computer too as we got one secondhand.
After the apple II died of its old age spent a few years withtout a PC until 98 with a used PC with win 95 in 2000 (though I have used 95 at school).
That computer lasted us a bit till it too gave up and we then used a newer computer in with windows 98, we then made the mistake of installing ME on her.
Thankfully that nightmare was over soon as we were finally able to get our hands on a XP computer.
Our first XP computer lasted a good 4 years for a emachine, but then came the xp service pack hell.
XP flew apart with SP1, we had to reinstall XP and again had hell with SP1 and we got a secondary computer with 2000 on her.
We had that set up till 2004 and then came service pack 2
Then we experimented with linux and with jumps in between we are all linuxers here :D

The last 4 years have been hell. Can't believe I've been using friggin XP for 8 years :smh:
I really loved slackware until I saw a bunch of devs at a party acting racist. :(
For some reason I'm pretty sure I'm leaving something out.
I've never been able to totally ditch windows- use wine for somethings but it was never good enough. Best situation I had was using vmware in linux which I am back to again.
I'd really prefer using OpenBSD but not enough eye candy or new hardware support to make me go there.

Started with Ubuntu 7.10
OpenSUSE
Mandriva
Ubuntu 8.04
Debian
PC-BSD
Sabayon
DesktopBSD
Slackware
FreeBSD
NetBSD
Debian
Arch Linux
And now currently with Gentoo & Fedora

I've tried way more distros than that so far during 2008 but these were the ones I stuck with for more than just a few weeks.
