Everytime I open, say, firefox, it starts in the upper left hand corner of my screen. If another window is open, it might start in the lower right corner. I want it to start in the middle every time. Is there a way to make it do that?

Try passing a "--geometry" value with the launcher (specially the "+XOFF+YOFF"), check this thread: gnome-terminal windows size on open (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=991037).

I'd like something like this also... When I have Firefox open I like to have Songbird using the Mini Player in the upper right hand corner on top of FF so I can get at it easily and it's out of the way but everytime I open it it's in the center of the screen...

Another option, if you are runing Compiz, is using it to place windows when opened in a smart way, take a look at this thread: Re: Windows start up under my top panel (http://backports.ubuntuforums.com/showpost.php?p=6169340&postcount=3)
