I am trying to find an old school entirely text based RPG game. So far I can't seem to find any :( Does anybody know of one?

Head onto the Hak5 bbs and get you some Legend of the Red Dragon. Or google for any syncrhonet bbs, they would most likely have it running as well.

Depends on what you mean by "old". The first thing I think of is Rogue and its (many) decendants, Nethack in particular.

I mean totally no graphical output other than text descriptions. I seem to recall playing one years ago that came with a very early version of Windows.

I think you are thinking of text adventures. Programs like Zork, Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, and the like. Am I right?

If I am, then you'll need a program called frotz. It's in synaptic under text adventures. For stories, check out The Interactive Fiction Archive (http://www.ifarchive.org).

As far as playing online, if that's your thing, you'll want to find some MUDs.

Hope this helps.
