I'm building a PC for my folks for Christmas. their using a fricken P3.... I had considered putting ubuntu on it, but my dad telecommutes, and theres no reason to make him the bane of corporate IT support. at least I'm making my little brother cover the vista, so my hands are clean.

getting my girlfriend a TB harddisk. she's always complaining about running out of space. Wish I could afford to build her a box as well.

happy holidays

I'm still considering what to get my family for Christmas. I think I will pool my money with my dad and sister get my mom a DSLR camera to replace the SLR one she has now. My dad... hm, I don't know yet. For my sister, I might get her something to do with Twilight (she's into it right now).

As for what I want, I said I would like a new 500GB hard drive (for my media center setup I have almost done), a usb TV tuner, or a netbook (EEE 1000 or Samsung NC10).

Hopefully I will not get a thing.

I planned all my gifts this summer and bought about 30 frames for pictures. So I guess I will be busy making pictures before christmas

Nothing special for me, thanks. I never know what I want, because sometimes I make a stupid decision and choose something I really don't care for, so recently I have just been asking for a little extra cash. Though with that cash and some I already have I plan to build a new system to play some games I have lying around which I have not played a lot.

My parents are getting me a external hard drive and my aunt & uncle is probably going to give me a 32 GB Ipod touch.

My aunt and grandma consulted each other and my grandma is giving me a pack of Itunes cards for Games and Apps (not music I buy from Amazon MP3) form costco.

I'm got my mom and dad both a Sansa Fuze (Black for dad and red for Mom) both 8 GB and I have already ripped all there favorite cds and added the music (7 GB) to the players. (Thank goodness they both like the same music and not two different things).

My aunt is actually getting a MP3 player too from my Mom so I just got a Amazon card (I had sent to my house) so she can by music on her 20/5 Fios connection :) I helped set up (I had to argue for about 30 minutes to get the tech to run Ethernet to the router.

My uncle loves (I mean loves) the fast food restaurant Five Guys and he asked for a 50 dollar gift card there

I'm giving my grandma a digital picture frame she has wanted and my Parents covered my grandpas gift (Grandparents divorced so I can't really buy combination presents)

About $260 that's my Christmas total (I'm 14 here not on a big budget)

As for the stuff I'm receiving I feel pretty spoiled.

P.S. I picked up an angel at the mall and got Monopoly and Scrabble for a little boy who enjoys board games.

EDIT: Woah something wonky happened that was supposed to be a rather large edit

I really want something that seems so simple, but has proven time and again to be impossible. Yet, I'll bet most all of us would agree that it would be the best gift ever.

You seem to have fallen into the modern trap of looking at Christmas as just another phase in the retail promotions calendar.

Gifts are nice, but it's really not what Christmas is all about.

Man I'm so predictable. I'm always asking for anything music. We started writing lists a few years back cause everyone was getting things that deep down they knew they would never use. I don't think there is one thing on my list that isn't music related in some way. I'm down to asking for guitar stands that I can screw into a wall and special metal plates with screws and bolts to help my carrying case for some music equipement to hold more.

I've become boring ... But I am always happy in the end cause it's all stuff I really need. Anyone else do the list thing?

I've already seen the first home christmas decoration, and it's not even December yet!

Either way, should be a good Christmas this year. My "main" present (Pandora - see signature) might not arrive in time for the 25th, which is a shame. Other presents will probably be little things, odds and ends.

Then again, it's more fun to get stuff for others and see their happiness :)

I totally agree.Isn't that one of the true spirits of Christmas - bringing joy and happiness to others? This year my grandchildren convinced grandpa that we needed to spend the day at our local homeless center, helping feed everyone and distribute the donated gifts to the children. They are extremely excited about this endeavor and I couldn't be prouder of them.
Guess it's going to be a long rewarding Christmas day for this rode hard and put away wet old guy.
Guess there's just no rest for wicked.

Alright its getting to that magical time of the year, where a bunch of crazy people go out to the stores, cause death or severe injury all for a holiday that has been warped from its original purpose.
http://www.upi.com/Top_News/2008/11/28/Man_trampled_to_death_in_Black_Friday_rush/UPI-55071227889455/

Oh what what a thrill it is to kill a helpless man at a door...

There are many reasons why i hate this time of the year, people get all hyped over a holiday that has become the bane of my existence.
For one this was originally a pagan holiday, then the Christians came in and said "hey this looks like a good day to celebrate the birth of Jesus"
I mean after all the Bible never gave a exact birth date for jesus, the original Yule seemed to be a very compatible holiday as it didnt share many of the same Pagan stuff early christians did not like.
So Christmas as born, a holiday that was meant to celebrate life, a day to celebrate joy.
Then came the big companies, the holiday sales and the commercialism.
It is that part of this time of the year I hate the most, I mean sure celebrate Jesus, celebrate family but not at the expense of human life for crying out loud.
Hey even as a non Christian I celebrated the ideals of this time of the year once, the joys of family and friends, the caring and love.
But there are just so many things that bug the @#% out of me.
For one Christmas is treated like a god among the holidays, I mean yes it is a day to celebrate the birth of someone who was allegedly the son of god if you take the bible to the heart (and I dont) but still there are holidays that are celbrated around this time.
There is Hanukkah, you know I am with Adam Sandler on this one, there are millions of songs about Christmas so few about Hanukkah :D
There is Kwanzaa, the African Christmas that technically can be celebrated by non Africans as well
there are others too but they are all 12th place compared to Christmas.
The commercialism is way past annoying, so many stupid specials, so many stupid songs, it gives me a headache.
Fine celebrate the holiday, but give me a rest!
Ugh, the more I think about it the more fed up I am.

I don't enjoy, and never will enjoy, the commercialism that Christmas gets. It is a time to spread joy to others. It is a time to give and receive gifts. And it is a time to celebrate the birth of Jesus. Not a time to break down the doors to a Wal-Mart store and trample/kill a worker to get a good deal. It saddens me how far people will go to save a few dollars, even with our currently sour economy.

Same here.

Never can make up my mind about anything. Not even sure that I want anything at all. Especially computer parts since I'm tryin to stop gaming so much (withdraws suck so bad; I'm constantly nagged at by mom for being so negative about everything. It's not like I was seriously addicted it was just a stress relief, but was taking up to much of my time.).

A number of us were discussing that issue today and the consensus was a simple question. Why? What could have been so important at Walmart that it was worth killing someone. This wasn't an issue of security but respect. All the people involved in this should seek some serious physiological assistance in my opinion. The concept that purchasing merchandise (not directly related to survival) is worth someones life, truly is beyond my ability to comprehend. You speak of commercialism, but that is one of the driving forces behind our economy. It's a big part of our GNP. I don't think the excuse of commercialism justifies their actions - I think it was just a total lack of respect for others which manifested into a mob mentality.
