This issue was resolved by deleting and recreating the partions with gparted. For some reason it didn't like partitions created with cfdisk.
Hi all, didn't find anything in search, sorry if I missed it.
Trying to migrate from gentoo to ubuntu 8.10, but having some problems with the installer.
/dev/sda1 * 1 15502 117192704 7 HPFS/NTFS
/dev/sda2 15502 15634 997920 82 Linux swap / Solaris
/dev/sda3 15634 15766 997920 82 Linux swap / Solaris
/dev/sda4 15766 51681 271518761 5 Extended
/dev/sda5 15766 17704 14651248+ 83 Linux
/dev/sda6 17704 20287 19527448+ 83 Linux
/dev/sda7 20287 51681 237340000+ c W95 FAT32 (LBA)
I can't blow away my partition table as I have information I need to maintain.
ls -al /dev/sda*
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 8, 0 2008-11-29 17:08 /dev/sda
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 8, 1 2008-11-29 17:08 /dev/sda1

You'll notice that sda5 is missing. The device node is there when I first boot, I can mount it and format it manually, but as soon as the (graphical.. haven't tried text.. if there is one) installer tries to prepare the drive for installation, the device node disappears for some reason. I checked /var/log/messages but there's no indicator of a problem. Here's a excerpt from the installer debug log

Error unsetting `/desktop/gnome/volume_manager/automount_drives': Failed to contact configuration server; some possible causes are that you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit, or you have stale NFS locks due to a system crash. See http://www.gnome.org/projects/gconf/ for information. (Details - 1: Failed to get connection to session: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.)
Nothing seems to indicate a problem here either.
I've gone so far as to recreate that particular partition ( a step I would rather like to avoid repeating :) )
Anyway, I thought it worth mentioning here in case anyone is having the same issue.
